The fireworks will fly on New Year's Eve in Seattle but that will be
about it for the city's big party to welcome in the new Millennium.
On the heals of the recent chaos at the World Trade Organization
meeting, and the arrest of a suspected terrorist on the US-Canadian
border city officials have decided to cancel the big New Year's Eve
celebration downtown.
The fear: media coverage made the event a possible terrorist target.
IT'S SAFER TO BE PRUDENT. THIS IS ALREADY AN UNPRECEDENTED,
UNPREDICTABLE NEW YEAR'S AND WE DID NOT WANT TO TAKE ANY CHANCE WITH
PUBLIC SAFETY.
Fifty thousand people had been expected to crowd the Seattle Center in
the shadow of the Space Needle to welcome in the year 2000.
But instead city officials will lock the gates to the park at 6 PM.
All that will be allowed are an afternoon concert, a circus performance
and a private party high atop the World's Fair landmark.
Fireworks will still stream from the 605-foot tower at midnight, but
residents will have to watch the show from afar.
Federal officials did not have a specific threat against the
celebration, still city officials thought canceling it was the best bet.
