(( The fireworks will fly on New Year's Eve in Seattle but that will be about it for the city's big party to welcome in the new Millennium. On the heals of the recent chaos at the World Trade Organization meeting, and the arrest of a suspected terrorist on the US-Canadian border city officials have decided to cancel the big New Year's Eve celebration downtown. The fear: media coverage made the event a possible terrorist target.
IT'S SAFER TO BE PRUDENT. THIS IS ALREADY AN UNPRECEDENTED, UNPREDICTABLE NEW YEAR'S AND WE DID NOT WANT TO TAKE ANY CHANCE WITH PUBLIC SAFETY.
Fifty thousand people had been expected to crowd the Seattle Center in the shadow of the Space Needle to welcome in the year 2000. But instead city officials will lock the gates to the park at 6 PM. All that will be allowed are an afternoon concert, a circus performance and a private party high atop the World's Fair landmark.
Fireworks will still stream from the 605-foot tower at midnight, but residents will have to watch the show from afar.
Federal officials did not have a specific threat against the celebration, still city officials thought canceling it was the best bet.

(( He is 70 years old, and one of the most revered figures in all of college football. Earlier this season Bobby Bowden became only the fifth coach in NCAA history win pick up 300 career wins. He's outspoken, opinionated, bluntly honest as evidenced recently when he was asked about Pater Warrick's non infamous clothing scam that cost him the Heisman. ((BOBBY BOWDEN:)) But Bowden won't discount the Hokies and in particular their number one ranked defense that features seven senior starters. ((BOBBY BOWDEN:)) And what about that quarterback? Does Bowden have nightmares about not being able to defend Michael Vick? ((BOBBY BOWDEN:)) And so is Bowden. The Sugar Bowl will be his 23rd bowl game as a head coach. Mike Stevens News 7 sports.))
