VO: He should know. Kuehl has devoted a good part of his practice to studying supplements.

SOT Kerry Kuehl/Natural Supplement Doctor:

"I think the FDA has recorded 150 adverse events of which something like close to 15 or 20 deaths."
VO: He says athletes like products such as "Blue Nitro" because it may boost muscle mass and induce a deep sleep, giving them more energy when they wake.
Eisenhauer ON CAM That effect comes courtesy of the active ingredient furanone Di Hydro, which the company claims stimulates the production of human growth hormone. That's questionable. What we do know is that once in the body it changes to a compound that's both dangerous and illegal.
VO: That compound is called G-H-B. It's been banned as a supplement in the US since 1996, for good reason.

SOT Kuehl:

"G-H-B is illegal because it's been an abusable drug. It can produce unconsciousness & coma. And if you're in a coma and you're not breathing, you could die."
VO: In fact, G-H-B is so risky, last January the F-D-A asked for the removal of supplements that synthesize it in our bodies. The rest is up to you. Since products like "Blue Nitro" are considered natural, they do not have to prove they actually work or are even safe.

SOT Kuehl:

"Most of the claims made by these supplements are not true. and they have no validity. So are you willing...based on the advertising and claims and by word of mouth, are you willing to take a product like this to put yourself at risk for a potential adverse and fatal event."
