Local governments in western Virginia have been monitoring the situation tonight, and officials remain confident the New Year will arrive with few problems.

Negotiators are spending their New year's Eve talking by phone with two women .. who are holding hostages inside a bank. They've released one .. but are still holding the others.

The women took four to six hostages in a Bank of America branch near Kansas City ... all of them are bank employees.
Traffic near the bank has been shut down as police cordoned off the area.

A high speed motorcycle chase down route 460 in Montvale --has landed a Roanoke man in jail.

Authorities say 27-year old Alexir Henriga Hairston refused to stop when a deputy tried to pull him over for speeding.
He allegedly led authorities on a 15- mile long chase on 460 at speeds up to 120 miles an hour.
Hairston eventually turned off on Fluff Road where he crashed his bike.
Hairston did not suffer any injuries.
He faces charges for reckless driving and attempting to elude authorities.

A Roanoke City Police Officer shot a suspect early this morning..

Missile launches have been spotted as the year two thousand arrived.
The Pentagon says Russia launched three short-range scud missiles into the Republic of Chechnya.
The missiles were seen by a US-Russian joint surveillance team monitoring Y-2-K related activity.
But US officials say the launches were not a result of any Y-2-K glitch.

Their release came after India freed three prisoners convicted of terrorism-related charges-
Amidst the smiles today- also tales of suffering-
One former hostage said the hijackers told passengers they would be killed one by one-
Others said they were blindfolded.
The hijackers took off- their whereabouts are not known.

Roanoke City Council voted down a proposal this morning for a pay increase in the year 2-thousand.

Council members voted on an emergency ordinance that would raise the mayor's salary by three thousand dollars, and council members pay by 2-thousand dollars.
But the ordinance failed -- getting four of the five votes needed to pass.
