Dr. Joseph F. Rock, 1883-1962
Dr. Joseph F. Rock, plant explorer, and scientist, known throughout the world died in Honolulu, Hawaii, December 5. Dr. Rock, a member of the American Rhododendron Society and holder of the A.R.S. Gold Medal had lived in Hawaii since 1957. His last plant hunting expedition in China was for the American Rhododendron Society in 1949. Seeds of 190 rhododendron species and lilies were sent back, and many fine plants from that expedition are now growing in the gardens of members on both coasts.
