Mr. Tsumagari of the Yakushima Kanko Hotel is beside a plant of R. yakushimanum on the summit ridge of Kuromi-dake. Volunteering to make the climb with Frank Doleshy, Mr. Tsumagari was a good companion, knowledgeable botanist, and effective civic booster. He is an employee of the Forestry Bureau for 13 years and now lives in Kagoshima. This climb and the results will be described in Part II of "Two Tourists in Japan."
