QBARS - v20n3 Great Lakes Chapter Show

Great Lakes Chapter Show

The 7th annual show of the Great Lakes Chapter was held May 28-29 at the new Garden Center of Greater Cleveland. Taking top honors as winner of the First President's Sterling Silver Bowl was an unnamed pink seedling of undesignated parentage, exhibited as a truss by Peter Girard Sr. of Geneva, Ohio. The Mo-Kan trophy, for best hardy pink, went to A. M. Shammarello, of Euclid, Ohio, for a truss of 'Pink Flair.'
Mr. Shammarello also received the chapter trophy for best catawbiense hybrid in commerce, for 'Romeo.' The chapter trophy for best new hybrid seedling never before shown went to Paul Bosley, of Mentor, Ohio, for a truss of an unnamed Dexter hybrid. Due to a late season few catawbiense ironclads were exhibited. However, a wealth of seedling's of mixed parentage, and a good representation of evergreen and deciduous azaleas were brought in from a three-state area.
Ribbons went to 16 exhibitors, with a total of 44 first ribbons awarded, 36 second ribbons, 32 thirds, and 26 honorable mentions. The display gardens featured more than 100 balled plants, mostly seedlings brought in by Girard Sr. Also contributing to the display garden were Musser Forests and E. M. Stroombeek.
