This year's Seattle Rhododendron Show was staged on May 16, 17 and 18 in conjunction with the National Convention in Bellevue, Washington. The participation was outstanding; with displays entered from many of the local chapters and an exhibit of Malaysian rhododendrons was flown in by a chapter from the San Francisco area. 42 exhibitors showed 112 specimen plants and 92 exhibitors from 7 chapters entered 732 trusses and sprays. Again we were pleased to have a non-competitive exhibit of Bonsai rhododendrons and a new Ikebana display of rhododendron flower arrangements. The following exhibitors were recipients of trophies:

  • Frederick & Nelson Perpetual cup for Best Landscaping Design, Garden Valley Nursery, Woodinville, WA.
  • Don Kennedy Award for Best Deciduous Azalea Plant in Landscape Exhibit, R. sanctum - Garden Valley Nursery.
  • Griswold Nursery Award for Best Evergreen Azalea Plant in Landscape, 'Stewartstonian' - Pacific Northwest Nursery.
  • Agro Fertilizer Award for Best Species Rhododendron Plant in Landscape Exhibit, R. augustinii Lackamas Blue - Pacific Northwest Nursery.
  • Garden Valley Nursery Award for Best Hybrid Rhododendron Plant in Landscape Exhibit, 'Purple Lace'—Hopkins Nursery, Bothell, WA.
  • Seattle Trust & Savings Perpetual Cup for Best Plant in Show, R. pronum - Warren Berg
  • Bellevue Square Trophy for Best Azalea Plant in Show, 'Hino-crimson' - Betty Weiss
  • Nordstrom Trophy for Best Species Plant in Show, R. pronum - Warren Berg
  • Richard Kolesar Novice Trophy for Best Plant entered by a Novice 'Hino-crimson' - Betty Weiss
  • Elizabeth and Clarence Bledsoe, M. D., Award for the Best New Hybrid Rhododendron Plant, not previously shown, and exhibited by its hybridizer. ( yaku-elliottii ) x yaku - 'Corona') - E. C. Brockenrough, M. D.
  • Mrs. William M. Culliton Trophy for Best Dwarf Rhododendron Plant, R. keiskei var. cordifolia , - Warren Berg
  • Seattle Chapter of Washington State Nurserymen's Association for the Best Named Washington Hybrid Rhododendron Plant. 'Maricee' - Mrs. Joseph Moodie
  • Seattle Rhododendron Society Annual Achievement Award for Best Truss of a New Hybrid Seedling, 'Diane' x 'G. Waterer' - Eric and Bob Korn
  • Bellevue Chamber of Commerce Trophy for Best Truss in Show, R. augustinii - David Goheen
  • Karl Korn Award for the Best Truss of a Rhododendron Hybrid either of whose parents are in the Thomsonii Series, 'Crest' - Mrs. Richard Kolesar
