Hybrid Rhododendron Grower Finds New
Approach to Shorter Rooting Time

Reprinted from Ornamentals Northwest, Dr. James Green, Editor

A comparison of two media for rooting hybrid rhododendron cuttings resulted in equally healthy root systems in Kys Kubes ® , within seven to eight weeks compared to 12 weeks in beds of peat and perlite. Kys Kubes ® , molded blocks of peat containing plant nutrients and having a preformed hole to receive and hold the cutting, not only resulted in faster rooting but also less chance of root breakage. Other points stressed were the importance of time of taking the cuttings (July and September were the reported best cutting times in North Carolina), preparing by cutting the stem at a 45° angle with a razor knife (clippers crimp the end of the stem), and moisture control.
