AGATEEN: R. yakushimanum x 'Henriette Sargent'. Cross (1969), raised, and introduced (1974) by Frank Arsen, Lindenhurst, NY. Buds Red Group 55A(Neyron Rose). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes, opening 54B fading to 54C (both Spinel Red) with age, with dorsal blotch of spotting Yellow Green Group 153C, reverse 58B (Rose Red). Calyx ⅛", light yellow green. Truss 6" across x high, ball to dome-shaped, with 15 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 4½" x 1½", narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, somewhat revolute, glabrous, Yellow Green Group 147A, under surface with plastered brown indumentum. Plant semi-dwarf, rounded, branching well, 3½' tall x 4' wide in 13 years. Blooms mid- to late May. Hardy to at least -10°F.

BONNIE BABE: 'Inca Gold' x dwarf orange hybrid of unknown parentage. Cross (1969), raised, and introduced (1976) (as Cecil's Choice) by James A. Elliott, Astoria, OR. Buds Yellow Group 10A (Barium Yellow) heavily shaded Red Group 51A-B (Rhodonite Red). Flowers openly campanulate, 1¾" across x 1½" long, with 5 evenly rounded to wavy lobes, Yellow Group 10 A-B, distinct veins down corolla, color more intense deep in throat, heavily spotted Red Group 53A-B (Cardinal Red) in dorsal and slightly on adjacent lobe sectors (does not extend far onto lobes themselves), reverse with distinct veins, some spotting shows through, irregularly flushed 51A-B on reverse lobes. Calyx 3/16-5/8", leafy, colored as corolla, long lobes at top with spotting. Truss 5" across x 3" high, dome-shaped, somewhat open at top, with 10-14 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 3-3½" x 1⅜-1½", elliptic, apiculate to mucronate, cuneate to rounded, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant semi-dwarf, rounded, branching well, 3' tall x 4' wide in 12 years. Blooms mid- to late May. Hardy to at least 10°F.

BUTTER BRICKLE: 'Hotei' x 'Lem's Cameo'. Cross (1976), raised, and introduced (1982) by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Flowers of heavy substance, 2½" across x 1¾" long, openly funnel-shaped to widely funnel-shaped, with 6-7, wavy to frilled lobes, Yellow Orange Group 15D (Chrome Yellow) at lobe edges darkening to 15B-C (Buttercup Yellow) toward center, throat and reverse 15B (very strong gold effect), with ½", star-shaped, Red Group 53B (Cardinal Red) blotch deep in throat and 53B dorsal spotting. Calyx leafy, to 1½" at top, shorter below, 15B with reddish edges and dorsal spotting as corolla, readily seen as rim to upper corolla giving "double" appearance. Truss 6" across x 4" high, ball-shaped to somewhat flat, with 12 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 4" x 2", elliptic to lanceolate, apiculate to cuspidate, rounded, flat, glabrous, dark green. New growth bronze. Plant probably broad, rounded, branching well; has grown to 2' in 6 years in gallon container. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F. Flowers long lasting and do not brown at lobe edges.

CLAIRE: R. yakushimanum x 'Coronation Day'. Cross (1969) by H.L. Larson, Tacoma, WA. Raised and introduced (1980) by Joe A. Davis, Sumner, WA. Buds Red Group 48B. Flowers of heavy substance, openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 1½" deep, with 5, wavy, reflexed lobes, opening Red Group 56B (fading to nearly white), prominent, 1-1½'', 51A (Rhodonite Red) blotch deep in throat, reverse 51D. Calyx negligible. Truss 7" x 7", conical, with 8-10 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 4" x 1¾", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, acute, cuneate, flat, margin undulate, somewhat leathery, glabrous, dull, slightly bullate, Green Group 137B, under surface with medium amount of greyed orange (brown) indumentum. Plant dwarf, broad, branching well 1½' tall x 2' wide in 10 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 5°F.

CONNETQUOT: 'Christmas Cheer' x 'Pygmalion'. Cross (1971), raised, and introduced by Alfred A. Raustein, Holbrook, NY. Buds Red Group 53B (Cardinal Red). Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2¼" across x 1¾" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 57A (Tyrian Purple), Yellow White Group 158D deep in throat and with prominent blotch of spotting Greyed Purple Group 187A on dorsal lobe. Calyx minute, yellowish-green. Truss 6" across x 5" high, conical to ball-shaped, with 15 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 4" x 1½", narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, acute with apiculus, cuneate, glabrous, Green Group 137A. Plant semi-dwarf, rounded, branching well, 18" tall x 22" wide in 11 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least-5°F.

COUGAR: 'Loderi King George' open pollinated. Seedling grown by Jim Drewry (c. 1970), then by Gene German for several years (both of Ft. Bragg, CA). Raised and introduced (a few plants distributed c. 1979 under synonym; then withdrawn from sale for stock buildup) by Catherine Weeks (Mrs. Melvin), Eureka, CA. Synonym: Loderi Cougar. Buds Red Group 53B (Cardinal Red). Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 3¾" across x 2¾" long, with 6 wavy lobes, quite fragrant. Red Group 55A (Neyron Rose) fading to 56A with age, rays of spotting 55A on dorsal lobes when flowers first open. Calyx ⅜", Red Group 50A (Claret Rose). Truss 9" across x 7" high, conical, with 15 flowers; flowers well positioned in truss and not floppy as in the case of many 'Loderi' clones. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 7⅝" x 2⅜", lanceolate, acute, rounded, glabrous. Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant rounded, branching well, 6' x 6'in 12 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least 20°F.

CYPRIAN: A Vireya hybrid. R. zoelleri x Chlorinda (an unregistered 19th century Veitch hybrid). Cross (1970) and raised by Peter Sullivan, San Francisco, CA. Named and introduced by William A. Moynier, Los Angeles, CA. Flowers exceptionally fleshy and long lasting, tubular funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 2¼" long, with 5 wavy lobes, not fragrant, Yellow Orange Group 21B (Maize Yellow) with wide edging Orange Group 26B (Spanish Orange). Calyx negligible. Truss 5½" across x 3" high, dome-shaped, with 7-8 flowers. Leaves held 3 years, 4" x 2", elliptic, acute, cuneate, with tiny, widely spaced, brown scales. Green Group 137A, under surface with tiny, tan, closely spaced scales. Plant rounded, branching well, 24" tall x 22" wide in 4 years. Blooms July-September. Hardy to at least 32°F.

EMILY ALLISON: 'J.H. van Nes' x 'Loderi King George'. Cross (1960), raised, bloomed (1967 or before), propagated, and sold (under pedigree) by Halfdan Lem, Seattle, WA. A propagation raised (after 1967), introduced, named, and registered by Joy and Joe Bailey, Bellevue, WA. Buds Red Group 55C (Neyron Rose). Flowers of heavy substance, openly funnel-shaped, 4¾ - 5" across, with 7 wavy lobes (somewhat re-curved on older flowers), very fragrant, White Group 155B, with Red Group 46A (Currant Red) ring deep in throat. Calyx ¼", Truss 8" across 8½" tall, ball-shaped, somewhat open at top, with 11 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 - 2 years, 6" x 2", narrowly elliptic, acute, rounded, flat to boat-shaped, glabrous, Green Group 137A. Plant upright, broad, branching well, 5½' tall x 5' wide in ± 15 years Blooms mid-, late May. Hardy to at least 10°F.

EXCALIBUR: 'Lem's Cameo' x 'Pink Petticoats'. Cross (1976), raised, and introduced (1981) by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Flowers of heavy substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 1¾" long, with 6 wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 57C (Rose Bengal) at lobe edges shading lighter to 65D in center of lobes and throat, conspicuous 57C ray down center of each lobe into throat, star-shaped blotch, between 57A (Tyrian Purple) and 58A (Indian Lake), deep within throat. Calyx less than ¼", light rose. Truss 6½" across 7½" tall, conical, with 28-32 flowers, very tight and full. Free flowering. Leaves held 2½ years, 6½" x 2¾", lanceolate, apiculate, cuneate, convex, glabrous, medium green. Plant upright, branching moderately with stiff branches, approximately 3' tall x 2' wide in 6 years. Blooms in mid May. Hardy to at least 0°F.

GAY ARSEN: R. yakushimanum x 'Henriette Sargent'. Cross (1969), raised, and introduced (1974) by Frank Arsen, Lindenhurst, NY. Buds Red Group 53D. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, opening 55B (Neyron Rose), fading to 55C, with Yellow Green Group 150A (Sap Green) dorsal blotch of spotting, reverse Red Purple Group 57C (Rose Bengal). Calyx ⅛", red. Truss 6½" across x 5" high, dome-shaped, with 15 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 4¾" x 1½", narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, Green Group 137B, under surface with a trace of indumentum. Plant semi-dwarf, broad, rounded, branching well, 3¾' tall x 4½' wide in 13 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least-10°F.

JEANNE WEEKS: A Robin Hill evergreen azalea. ('Louise Gable' x 'Tamagiku') x ('Kaigetsu' x 'Carol' (Gable)). Cross (1960), raised, and introduced (1974) by Robert Gartrell, Wyckoff, NJ. Described by Gartrell and Donald H. Voss. Synonym: U7-8 Buds open like rose buds. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1⅜" long, with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) wavy lobes, with variable number of central petaloid stamens (irregularly double), Red Purple Group 62A (Rhodamine Pink) to 65A (Amaranth Rose), with 63B (Spiraea Red) spotting on dorsal and slightly on adjacent lobes. No calyx. 0-7 stamens. Inflorescence 1-2 flowered. Leaves held 1 - 2 years, 1½" x ⅞", elliptic to broadly elliptic or narrowly obovate, broadly acute, cuneate, flat, glossy, slightly hairy (both surfaces), Green Group 137A. Plant semi-dwarf, broad, branching well, 20" tall x 34" wide in 20 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -10°F. There is another plant being grown with this name; it, however, is fully double, very flat-faced, much lighter in color, and has a prominent, ¼" long, green calyx.

LA BELLE HELENE: A Robin Hill evergreen azalea. 'Glacier' x 'Lady Louise'. Cross (1961), raised, and introduced by Robert Gartrell, Wyckoff, NJ. Synonym: V2-3. Flowers flat saucer-shaped 3" across x 1" deep, with 5 wavy lobes, throat white, with broad Red Purple Group 63C (Spiraea Red), irregular edging, with very faint dorsal blotch. Calyx 3/16", light green. Inflorescence 1-2-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held well, 2¾" x 1⅛", elliptic, mucronate, cuneate, flat, glossy, Green Group 138A-B. Plant dwarf, broad, rounded, branching well, 18" tall x 32" wide in 18 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least-10°F.

LAURAGO: 'Moser's Maroon' x R. yakushimanum . Cross(1962) by Ben Lancaster. Raised, and introduced by Dr. David Goheen, Camas, WA. Buds Red Group 55A (Neyron Rose). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, fragrant, ⅜", 55A edging, shading through 55B to 55D in throat, with Yellow Green Group 153A dorsal lobe spotting, reverse 55B. Calyx minute, green, pink. Truss 7" across x 6" tall, conical, with 16-18 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 4-5 years, 5" x 1¾", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, to slightly oblanceolate, acute, cuneate, flat with slight revolute margin, grossly glabrous, dull, slightly bullate, under surface with medium, Greyed Orange Group 164B indumentum. Plant rounded, branching well, 4' x 4'in 10 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 5°F.

LAZARUS: A Vireya hybrid. ( R. aurigeranum x 'Dr. Herman Sleumer') x R. konori . Cross (1972) and raised by Peter Sullivan, San Francisco, CA. Named and introduced (1980) by William A. Moynier, Los Angeles, CA. Individual unopened flowers droop in hanging position just after bud opens, then resurrect into normal truss. Flowers of good substance, 3¼" across x 3" long, with 7 wavy lobes, very fragrant, Red Group 38A (Azalea Pink) changing to Orange Group 26C (Spanish Orange) in throat. Calyx minute, deep pink. Truss 8½" across x 5" high, dome-shaped, somewhat lax, with 8-10 flowers. Leaves held 2years, 4½" x 1¾", glabrous, glaucous, elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, convex, Yellow Green Group 147A, under surface with tiny, tan, closely spaced scales visible with lens. Plant broad, rounded, branching moderately, 2½' x 2½' in 10 years. Blooms December - April. Hardy to at least 32°F.

MRS. HELEN DUNKER: ( R. decorum x R. discolor ) x 'Crest'. Cross (1970), raised, and introduced by Alfred A. Raustein, Holbrook, NY. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2½" long, with 7 evenly rounded to wavy lobes, fragrant, China white. Calyx minute, yellowish-green. Truss 7" across x 5" high, dome-shaped, open (somewhat lax), with 9 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 5½" x 2", oblanceolate, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Yellow Green Group 146A. Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 32" x 32" in 12 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -5°F.

ORANGE MARMALADE: R. yakushimanum x 'Mrs. Lammot Copeland'. Cross (1969) by H.L. Larson, Tacoma, WA. Raised (as Orange Bells) and introduced (1980) by Joe A. Davis, Sumner, WA. Buds Red Group 46C (Turkey Red). Flowers of good substance, campanulate, 2½" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Yellow Orange Group 19A, flushed Orange Red Group 34C&D particularly at lobe edges inside and out, throat Yellow Orange Group 20A. Calyx negligible. Truss 7" across x 4" high, lax, with 10-12 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 4½" x 2", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, flat, glabrous, Green Group A-B, under surface with very slight indumentum visible only with lens. Plant rounded, branching well 40" x 40" in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.

PRESIDENT POINT: ('Jalisco' x R. yakushimanum ) x ('Lackamas Spice' x R. lacteum ). Cross (1972) by Cecil Smith, St. Paul, OR. A.R.S. Seed Exchange No. 73-442. Raised and introduced by Alice Poot Smith, Kingston, WA. Buds Red Group 54C (Spinel Red). Flowers of good substance, open-funnel-campanulate, 3" across x 2½" long, with 7 wavy lobes, Yellow White Group 158B at maturity, 54C and 53A blotch deep in throat, some minimal 53A spotting and rays in throat, reverse with stripes and shading 54C. Pedicels and styles prominently red. Calyx minute, dark red. Truss 8" across x 6" high, dome-shaped, open at top, with 14 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 4½" x 1⅞", elliptic, apiculate, rounded, convex, glabrous, dull, Green Group 137A, under surface with very light, patchy, orange brown indumentum visible only with lens. Plant upright, broad, branching moderately with stiff branches, 36" tall x 40" wide in 9 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to 5°F.

PURE PERFECTION: An evergreen azalea. 'White Gumpo' x Wakaebisu (Satsuki). Cross (1974), raised, and introduced by Dr. Sandra McDonald, Hampton, VA. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1⅝" long, with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) wavy to frilled lobes, white with very light green throat. Calyx 1½" long, colored as corolla. Inflorescence 1-2-flowered. Leaves held about a year (well through winter), 1" x ½", narrowly obovate to almost elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, flat to concave, glossy, Spinach Green o960 (H.C.C.), ciliate and both surfaces strigose. Plant broad, branching well with decumbent branches, full, 20" tall x 36" wide in 6 years. Blooms in late May, early June. Hardy to at least 5°F.

ROCKHILL IVORY RUFFLES: ('Crest' x 'Odee Wright') x 'Skipper'. Cross (1972), raised, and introduced (1980) by James C. Brotherton, Battle Ground, WA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 5" across x 3" long, with 7 wavy to frilled lobes, throat Primrose Yellow 601/1, (H.C.C.) shading to yellowish-white at periphery, Turkey Red 721/3 spotting in dorsal throat. Calyx ¼", light green. Truss 9" across x 8" tall, conical, with 15 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 4-4¼'' x 1¾-2", narrowly obovate to elliptic, apiculate (apiculus long), cuneate, glabrous, dull, flat, Ivy Green ooo1060/3. Plant broad, branching well with stiff, upright branches, 4½' tall x 3' wide in 8 years. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least 10°F.

ROCKHILL PARKAY: ('Crest' x 'Odee Wright') x 'Skipper'. Cross(1972), raised, and introduced (1980) by James C. Brotherton, Battle Ground, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4½" across x 1½" long, with 6 evenly rounded lobes, Sulphur Yellow ½ - ⅓ (H.C.C.) in throat shading to creamy white at periphery of 3 dorsal lobes and on lower lobes, with Turkey Red 721 /3, ½" eye deep in throat, and with stripes of intensified yellow down center of each lobe into throat. Calyx irregular to ¼", pink and green. Truss 6 - 7" x 6 - 7", ball-shaped, with 15-17 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 3½-4½" x 1½-2", elliptic, apiculate, rounded, concave, glabrous, dull, Parsley Green oo962/2. Plant upright, open, branching moderately, 4' tall x 3' wide in 8 years. Blooms in early April. Hardy to at least 10°F.

ROCKHILL SUNDAY SUNRISE: ('Crest' x 'Odee Wright') x 'Skipper'. Cross (1 972), raised and introduced (1980) by James C. Brotherton, Battle Ground, WA. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 5" across x 2" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, throat and dorsal lobes. Primrose Yellow 6O1/2 (H.C.C), shading to 6O1/3 at periphery, lower lobes 6O1/3; ½", dorsal, Signal Red 719/1 blotch deep in throat. Calyx minute, light green. Truss 9" across x 8" tall, ball-shaped, with 13-15 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 5" x 2", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, apiculate, cuneate to rounded, flat, glabrous, dull, Ivy Green ooo1060. Plant upright, branching well with stiff branches, 5' tall x 3' wide in 8 years. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least 10°F.

ROSINA LUKACH: R. decorum x ('Prelude' x 'Crest'). Cross (1972), raised and introduced by Alfred A. Raustein, Holbrook, NY. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1½" long, with 5 evenly rounded to wavy lobes, fragrant, Yellow Group 4C (Primrose Yellow). Calyx ⅜", light yellow green. Truss 5" across x 4" high, conical to ball-shaped, with 8 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 5½" x 2", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, apiculate, rounded, glabrous, glossy, Yellow Green Group 147A. Plant upright, broad, branching well, 35" tall x 32" wide in 1 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.

SHERBROOK: A Robin Hill evergreen azalea. ('Vervaeniana' x 'Lady Louise') x unknown. Cross (1967), raised, and introduced by Robert Gartrell, Wyckoff, NJ. Synonym X55-9. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1¾" across x 1¼" long with 5 wavy lobes and variable number of petaloid stamens, Purple Group 78B (Imperial Purple) with prominent Red Purple Group 74A (Cyclamen Purple) spotting on dorsal and extending onto adjacent lobes. Calyx ⅜", Green Group 139C. Inflorescence 2-3-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves retained well, 2" x 1", elliptic, acute, cuneate, Green Group 138A, both surfaces hairy. Plant upright, branching well with stiff, upright branches, 28" tall x 38" wide in 14 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F.

SHIRLEY CREELMAN: 'C.I.S.' x 'Apricot Nectar'. Cross(1972) by Clarence C. Barrett, Jr., Eugene, OR. A.R.S. Seed Exchange No. 73-355. Raised and introduced (1980) by Alice Poot Smith, Kingston, WA. Buds Red Group 46C (Turkey Red). Flowers of good substance, open-funnel-campanulate, 3¼" across x 3½" long, with 7 wavy lobes, Red Group 54B (fading to 54C) (both Spinel Red), shading at about 1¼" from base to prominent 46C lower throat around interior. Calyx ⅛", dark gray. Truss 8" across x 7" high, ball-shaped, with 7-14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years, 5" x 1½"', narrowly elliptic, acute with long apiculus, cuneate to rounded, glabrous, dull. Green Group 137A, under surface with very light, Greyed Orange Group 172D indumentum. Plant upright, rounded, branching well with stiff branches, 3' x 3' in 8 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 5°F.

SIR ROBERT: A Robin Hill evergreen azalea. ('Glacier' x 'Tamagiku') x 'Getsutoku'. Cross (1967), raised, and introduced by Robert Gartrell, Wyckoff, NJ. Synonym: T1 5-8. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2" long, with 5-6 wavy, very broad lobes, Red Group 55D, throat lighter 55C (Neyron Rose), with no markings. Calyx ⅝", light green. Inflorescence usually 2-flowered. Leaves retained well, 2½" x ¾", narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, flat, dull, Green Group 137A. Plant rounded, branching well with stiff, upright branches, 17" tall x 24" wide in 12 years. Blooms in late May, early June. Hardy to at least -10°F.
