BOB WHITE: A Robin Hill evergreen azalea. Oakland (an unknown hybrid) x 'Dr. Bergmann'. Cross (1968), raised, and introduced by Robert D. Gartrell, Black Mountain, NC. Synonym N42-6. Flowers funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1⅛" long, with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose) wavy lobes, white, throat Yellow Green Group 150D, no markings. Calyx, as corolla. Flower cluster 2-flowered. Floriferous. Leaves held well through winter (2+ years), 1" x 1", elliptic to broadly elliptic, concave, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, Green Group 138A (winter leaves very dark and glossy), under surface very slightly hairy. Plant broad, branching well, 34" tall x 45" wide in 11 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -10°F.

CANADIAN LILAC. 'Rocket' x (selected unnamed clone of 'Catalgla' x 'Lady Bessborough'). Cross (1974), raised, and introduced (1983) by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 5 cm. across x 4 cm. long, with 5 wavy to frilled, triangular petals, cut to base, outside margins almost straight across (not rounded), Purple Group 76D, with a few light tan spots at base of dorsal petal, reverse 76B. Calyx 2 mm., Yellow Green Group 145A. Truss 10 cm. across x 8 cm. high, conical, with 13 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 11 cm. x 4.5 cm., elliptic to narrowly elliptic, flat, broadly acute (knobbed), cuneate, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 146B, with light, scattered, patchy, light tan indumentum visible only with lens. Plant dwarf, branching with creeping and stiff, upright branches, 33 cm. tall x 26 cm. wide in 9 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least-25°F.

CANADIAN MAGENTA: 'Rocket' x (selected unnamed clone of 'Catalgla' x 'Lady Bessborough'). Cross (1974), raised, and introduced (1982) by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 5 cm. across x 3 cm. long, with 5 wavy to frilled, piece-of-pie shaped petals, cut to base (outside margin only somewhat rounded). Red Purple Group 74D with 74B spotting on basal half of dorsal petal. Calyx 2 mm., Yellow Green Group 145A. Truss 11 cm. across x 9 cm. high, conical, with 13 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 7.5 cm. x 4 cm., elliptic, flat, broadly acute, cuneate (almost rounded), grossly glabrous, dull, Green Group 137A to Yellow Green Group 147B, under surface with light, scattered, patchy tan indumentum, visible only with lens. Plant upright, branching moderately, 58 cm. x 58 cm. in 9 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -25F.

CASTANETS: 'Jan Dekens' x 'Point Defiance'. Cross (1966), raised, and introduced (before 1975) by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Buds red. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 4-5" across x 1-2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, fragrant, Red Purple Group 62D shading to 66C at lobe edges, with Red Purple Group 59C spotting (1" long x 1" wide) in dorsal throat, reverse 68C (Roseine Purple) with 57B (Fuchsia Purple) radial ribs and prominent fine veins between ribs. Stamens red. Calyx negligible. Truss 8-10" x 8-10", conical to ball-shaped, with 13-15 flowers. Leaves held 2-3 years, 7" x 2", narrowly elliptic to elliptic to somewhat oblanceolate, flat, acute to apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, somewhat glossy. Yellow Green Group 146A. Plant upright, branching moderately, with average to stiff branches, 6' x 6' in 17 years. Blooms early to mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.

ED'S RED: 'Mars' x 'America'. Cross (1957), raised, and introduced (1981) by Harold Ed. Reiley, Woodsboro, MD. Buds darker than open flowers. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Group 53B (Cardinal Red), with ", light brown blotch of spots on dorsal lobe. Calyx minute, green. Truss 6" x 6", ball-shaped, with up to 20 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 4" x 2", elliptic, acute, cuneate, margin undulate, glabrous, dark green. Plant rounded, branching moderately with arching branches, 5' x 5' in 25 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -15°F.

FRANK HEUSTON: 'Golden Belle' x 'Autumn Gold'. Cross (1972), named, and registered by Walt Elliott. Seed raised by Frank Maranville. Seedling (1975) raised and introduced by B.F. Heuston. All of Shelton, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 6 wavy lobes, Orange Red Group 35C (Brick Red), lobe edging (") shading to Yellow Orange Group 22B (Orange Buff) in throat. Orange Red Group 34B spotting in dorsal throat. Calyx negligible. Truss 7" across x 4" high, flat, with 10-14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 3-5" x 1⅛-1", narrowly elliptic, convex, acute, cuneate, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 146A. Plant upright, branching well, 4' x 4' in 8 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.

GOLD INCENSE: 'Lemon Custard' x 'Crest'. Cross (1970), named, and registered by Walter Elliott. Raised by Fred Peste. Introduced by Peste and Elliott. Both of Shelton, WA. Flowers open funnel-campanulate, 4" x 3", with 7 wavy lobes, very fragrant, Yellow Orange Group 16C (Buttercup Yellow), with " edging Red Group 55C (Neyron Rose), 55C spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx ", 16C. Truss 7" across x 8" high, tall (somewhat lax), with 14-18 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 6" x 2", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, somewhat convex and slightly revolute, acute, cuneate, glabrous, dull, Green Group 137B. Plant upright, open, branching well, 6' tall x 5' wide in 10years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 5°F.

HILLSDALE: 'Chesterland' x R. fortunei . Cross (1967) and registered by H. Roland Schroeder, M.D. Raised by H. Roland Schroeder and Sons. Introduced (1976) by Stephen Schroeder. All of Evansville, IN. Buds Red Group 55B (Neyron Rose). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 9 cm. across x 4.5 cm. long, with 5-6 wavy lobes, slightly fragrant. Red Group 56B, shading to ± cm. edging 56D, with prominent Yellow Green Group 154B (Chartreuse Green) spotting in dorsal lobe and somewhat on adjacent lobe sectors, 3 cm. x 3 cm. Calyx 1-2 mm., Yellow Green Group 143C. Truss 13 cm. across x 16 cm. Tall, conical, with 18 flowers. Sometimes with 2 trusses per terminal. Free flowering. Leaves held 3 years (few 4), 14.5 cm. x 6.1 cm., narrowly elliptic to elliptic, concave, acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137B. Plant upright, rounded, branching well, with some arching branches, 1.3 m. tall x 1 m. across in 11 years. Blooms late April, early to Mid-May. Hardy to at least -26°F. Registrant finds plant heat tolerant to +100°F and disease and insect resistant.

ICE FLOE: Parents unknown. Cross (1972) by H.L. Larson, Tacoma, WA. Raised and introduced by Milton Wildfong, Mission, B.C., Canada. Buds Red Purple Group 67C. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, lavender aging to pure white, with considerable spotting on dorsal lobe, chestnut becoming green. Calyx negligible. Truss 8" x 8", ball-shaped, with up to 18 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 5" x 1", elliptic to narrowly elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, grossly glabrous, glossy, Green Group 139A, under surface with medium, easily rubbed off. Greyed Yellow Group 160B-161B indumentum. New growth silvery tomentose (becomes tan and is mostly lost in winter) and with pink bracts. Plant broad, upright, branching well, 3' tall x 4' wide in 9 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -5°F.

MARIE'S CHOICE: An evergreen azalea. ('Hino-crimson' x R. yedoense var. poukhanense ) x 'Desiree'. Cross (1961), raised, and introduced (1974) by A. M. Shammarello, S. Euclid, OH. Described in registrant's Catalog (with picture), and Hybrids & Hybridizers, Rhododendrons and Azaleas for Eastern North America , Edited by Livingston and West, 1978, pp. 180-1. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1" long, with 5 frilled lobes, quite fragrant, white. Calyx ⅜", strong yellow green 5GY 7/10 (Nickerson). Flower cluster 5-6" across, flat, 2-3-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 1" x ", near elliptic to near narrowly obovate, convex, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, setose (with lens), strong yellow green 5/6, ciliate, under surface setose (with lens), petiole somewhat winged. Plant upright, broad, semi-dwarf, branching well with stiff, upright branches, 2' tall x 3' wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -20°F.

MAUD CORNING: 'Britannia' x 'Skyglow' (Dexter #9). Seedling from Charles O. Dexter, Sandwich, MA. (1940). Raised, registered, and introduced by The Holden Arboretum, Mentor, OH. Described by Peter W. Bristol. Buds Red Group 55B (Neyron Rose). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 8 cm. across x 5 cm. long, open-faced with 7 rounded, overlapping lobes (dorsal lobes reflexed), quite fragrant, Red Group 56C shading to Red Purple Group 62C edging (±5 mm. wide), throat Yellow Green Group 150C with negligible dorsal rays of Yellow Green Group 151C spotting in throat. Stamens missing or present as greatly aborted tissue mass about ovary and base of style. Stigma prominently Yellow Green Group 154B. Calyx 2 mm.. Yellow Green Group 144C. Truss 15 cm. across x 13 cm. tall, lax, with 8 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 13 cm. x 4.5 cm., narrowly elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate (some oblique), glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 146A. Plant rounded, branching well, 70" tall x 65" wide in 14 years. Blooms in mid-June. Hardy to at least -18°F.

MONIQUE BEHRING: 'Rocket' x R. yakushimanum . Cross (1974), raised, and introduced (1982) by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 6.5 cm. across x 3.5 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Group 56A (Neyron Rose), with Red Purple Group 73B spotting in dorsal lobe sector, reverse 73B with darker ribs down centers of lobes to base. Calyx 2 mm., Yellow Green Group 1C. Truss 13 cm. across x 10 cm. tall, conical, with 13-15 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 11 cm. x 4-4.5 cm., elliptic to narrowly elliptic, convex, acute, cuneate, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 144A-146A, with medium, Greyed Yellow Group 162C indumentum. Plant dwarf, branching well, 25 cm. x 25 cm. in 9 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -25°F.

NISSEQUOGUE: R. decorum x 'Pygmalion. Cross(1971), raised, and introduced by Alfred A. Raustein, Holbrook, L. I., NY. Buds Red Purple Group 63A (Spiraea Red). Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-campanulate, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, 63B, prominent dorsal spotting in throat Grey Brown Group 199C. Calyx minute, Yellow Green Group 144B. Truss 6" across x 5" high, dome- to ball-shaped, with 10 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 3-5" x 1-3", elliptic, flat, mucronate, rounded, glabrous, glossy. Green Group 137A. Plant rounded, upright, branching well, 3' x 3' in 11 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -5°F.

OOH GINA: 'Golden Belle' x 'Lem's Cameo'. Cross (1976) (A.R.S. Seed Exchange 1977-420), raised, and introduced by Mr. C.R. Burlingame, Hoquiam, WA. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 7 frilled lobes, with faint fragrance, Orient Pink 416/, (H.C.C.), shading to ±" Camellia Rose 622 edging, star-shaped, Cardinal Red 822 blotch (radius about ") deep in throat above stamens, reverse 622. Calyx negligible, rose. Truss 7" across x 7" high, ball-shaped, with 15 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 3-4 years, 5" x 2", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, acute with apiculus, cuneate, glabrous, Spinach Green o960. New growth bronzy. Plant rounded, branching moderately with stiff, upright branches, 28" tall x 36" wide in 7 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least 7°F.

PARTY GIRL: Whitney Late Red (an unregistered selection of 'Leo' x 'Britannia) x 'Loderi King George'. Cross (1970), raised, and introduced by Fred Peste, Shelton, WA. Flowers of good substance, 4" across x 3" long, with 6 wavy lobes, fragrant, Red Purple Group 63D (Spiraea Red), shading to " edging Red Group 55B (Neyron Rose), Greyed Orange Group 167B shading in throat, reverse 63C. Calyx ⅛", yellowish-green. Truss 7" across x 6" tall, ball-to dome-shaped, with 10-12 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 6" x 2", narrowly elliptic, flat, margins somewhat wavy, apiculate, cuneate to rounded, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 141A. Plant broad, rounded, branching well, 6' tall x 10' wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 5°F.

SIERRA BEAUTY: 'Mrs. Horace Fogg' x 'Point Defiance'. Cross (1966), raised, and introduced (before 1978) by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Buds Red. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 5" across x 2" long, with 5, wavy, reflexed lobes, Red Purple Group 62D, darkening to 58C edging, 2 rays, 1" x 3/16", 58B, in dorsal throat, " apart and radiating outward. Calyx negligible. Truss 10" x 10", dome-shaped, with ±18 flowers. Leaves held 3 years, 6-9" x 2-3", narrowly elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous. Yellow Green Group 146B to darker. Plant upright, rounded, branching moderately, with average to stiff branches, 6' x 6' in 17 years. Blooms mid- to late May Hardy to at least 0°F.

SUN GLEAM: 'Parker's Pink' x 'Clara Raustein'. Cross (1970), raised, and introduced by Alfred A. Raustein, Holbrook, L. I., NY. Buds Red Group 53C (Cardinal Red). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy to frilled lobes, 53C edging shading to White Group 155D in throat, minor dorsal 53A spotting, reverse Red Purple Group 57B (Rose Bengal) becoming lighter toward base. Calyx ⅛", Greyed Red Group 182D. Truss 4" x 4", ball-shaped, somewhat open at top, with 12 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 4" x 1", narrowly elliptic, acute (slight knob), cuneate, glabrous, glossy. Green Group 137A. Plant rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well, about 2' x 2' in 11 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least -5°F.

TAMINO: A Robin Hill evergreen azalea. 'Kaigetsu' x (Nancy of Robinhill' x Ledifolia Rosea (a plant obtained from Tingle Nursery in late '40s or early '50s, similar to 'Sekidera', which is illustrated in Lee, The Azalea Book , 1965, as Mucronatum f. sekidera)). Cross (1967), raised, and introduced by Robert D. Gartrell, Black Mountain, NC Synonym: V1-8. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy lobes, white suffused to Red Purple Group 63B-C (Spiraea Red) at margins, with faint Greyed Yellow Group 160B spotting on dorsal and somewhat on adjacent lobes. Flower has a silvery iridescence. Calyx ", Yellow Green Group 144B. Flower cluster 2-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held well through winter (1-2 years), 2" x 1" (spring leaves) to 1" x " (winter leaves), narrowly obovate and obtuse (winter), elliptic and cuneate (spring), both flat, cuneate, glossy, Green Group 143A (winter leaves 137B), under surface sparsely hairy. Plant broad, creeping, branching well with decumbent branches, 1' tall x 4' wide in 12 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -10°F.

TAN DILLY: A Robin Hill evergreen azalea. 'Lady Louise' x ('Kaigetsu' x 'Carol' (Gable)). Cross (1967), raised, and introduced by Robert D. Gartrell, Black Mountain, NC. Synonym U2-9. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Red Group 49C (Venetian Pink), with Red Group 54C (Spinel Red) sometimes shading to Greyed Red Group 181D spotting (often faint) on dorsal and extending onto adjacent lobes. Calyx ", light green. Flower cluster 2-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held well through winter (2+ years), 1" x ⅝", elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, glossy, Green Group 135A. Plant dwarf, broad, branching well, some stiff, upright, 12" tall x 25" wide in 12 years. Blooms late May, early June. Hardy to at least-10°F.

TO BEE: 'Patricia' x R. keiskei 'Yaku Fairy'. Cross (1972), raised, and introduced by Warren E. Berg, Pt. Ludlow, WA. Buds Red Group 46C (Turkey Red). Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1" across x 1" long, with 5 wavy to frilled lobes, Red Group 49B (Venetian Pink) shading to 49C in throat, with Red Group 50A (Claret Rose) spotting in dorsal throat, reverse Red Group 47D (Geranium Lake) to 50C (Claret Rose), mostly 48D (Empire Rose). Calyx ", 50B. Flower cluster 2-2" across x 1-1" high, with 3-5 lax flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 1⅛" x ", elliptic, convex, acute (knobbed), cuneate, glabrous, dull. Green Group 138B, under surface with widely spaced, small bronze scales visible with lens. Plant dwarf, rounded, spreading, branching well, 10" tall x 20" wide in 10 years. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least -10°F. [Name correction: 'To Bee' should be spelled 'Too Bee'. - mod. 9/04/12, ref. ]

TOFINO: 'Lem's Cameo' x ['Jalisco' x ('Crest' x 'King of Shrubs')]. Cross (1976), raised, and introduced by John G. Lofthouse, Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Buds red. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 3" long, with 5-7 wavy lobes, Yellow Group 5D (Dresden Yellow) sectors from lobe edges to base of corolla, with Red Group 55B-C (Neyron Rose) sectors between, reverse the same. Calyx -", yellow and ivory flushed rose. Truss 8" across x 6" tall, dome-shaped to flat, with 15-16 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2+ years, 5-6" (or more) x 3" (or less), elliptic, concave, margin undulate, rounded (slightly cordate), glossy, Yellow Green Group 147A, texture heavy. Plant upright, branching well with average to stiff branches, 5' tall x 4' wide in 7 years (plant was grown in shade). Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least 0°F.

CORRECTIONS

'WHITE LIGHTS': published 36:3 (Summer) 1982. Correct corolla color to: Red Group 56C fading to nearly White Group 155D, with Yellow Orange Group 19A dorsal spotting.

'PHYLLIS KORN': published 35:3, (summer) 1981. Hardy to at least -15°F.
