ARCTIC DAWN: R. maximum x R. brachycarpum ssp. tigerstedtii . Cross (1973), raised, and introduced (1982) by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Buds light pink. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped 5 cm. across x 4 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, pure white with 4 mm. Red Group 56A (Neyron Rose) edging and Yellow Group 4A (Primrose Yellow) spotting in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx 4 mm, Yellow Green Group 154D. Truss 15 cm. x 15 cm., dome-shaped, with 19 flowers. Leaves held 2 years, 15 cm. x 5 cm. narrowly elliptic to somewhat oblanceolate, convex, somewhat apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, slightly glossy, near Yellow Green Group 146B, under surface with medium amount of somewhat patchy (noted with lens), Greyed Yellow Group 161A-D, plastered indumentum. Plant upright, branching well with stiff branches, 80 cm. tall x 60 cm. wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-June. Hardy to at least -35°F.
BIG RED: 'Anna' x 'Loderi Pink Diamond'. Cross (early 1960's), raised, and introduced (1970s) by Ethel S. Nielsen, Salem, OR. Described, registered, and further distributed (after 1980) by June Sinclair, Port Ludlow, WA. Buds Red Group 53A (Cardinal Red). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 5" across x 2" long, with 5-8 wavy to frilled lobes, Red Group 46A (Currant Red), with 53A splash at base of dorsal lobe deep in throat and faint 53A ribs (1-3) on inside and outside of each lobe from near edge to base of corolla. Calyx minute, 46A. Truss 10-11" across x 9-10" high, tall, conical, with 12-18 (usually 15) flowers. Leaves held 3-4 years, 7-8" x 2-2", lanceolate, concave, acute, rounded, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137A. New leaves reddish, later green with Greyed Purple Group 183A margin for several weeks. Winter stems and buds 183A. Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 8' tall x 7' wide in ±20 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 5°F.
CAROL KITCHEN: A Linwood hardy evergreen azalea. Parents unknown. Cross (1967), raised, and introduced (1980) by G. Albert Reid, Linwood, NJ. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, with 5+5 wavy lobes (hose-in-hose), Red Purple Group 57C (Rose Bengal), with 57A dorsal spotting. Calyx whorl 1" long. 5 stamens. Inflorescence 4" across x 2" high, dome-shaped, 3-4-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held well through winter, 1-1" x -", elliptic, concave, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, ciliate, Yellow Green Group 147B, both surfaces moderately setose (with lens). Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 2' tall x 2' wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -10°F.
CHEERFUL GIANT: A Knap Hill azalea. 'Whitethroat' x unnamed yellow seedling. Cross (1973), raised, and introduced (1984) by Stan E. Sorenson, Homestead Nurseries, Clayburn, B.C., Canada, Buds Apricot 609/-, (H.C.C.). Flowers of good substance, open funnel-campanulate, 3" across x 3" long, with 15 wavy to frilled lobes and petals (a double,), Straw Yellow 604 to 604/1, reverse Apricot 609/1. All lobes and petals about the same length, with an occasional stamen; usually none. Stigma green. Calyx ", greenish. Not fragrant. Truss 6" x 6", compact, ball-shaped, with 12 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 3-4" x 1⅝"-1", near elliptic, narrowly obovate, acute (knobbed), cuneate, glossy, Spinach Green o960, with widely scattered setae, ciliate, under surface with somewhat pubescent midrib, midrib and veins with scattered setae (all visible with lens). Leaves in fall a metallic blue bronze. Plant upright, rounded, branching moderately with unusually thick, stiff, upright stems, 4' tall x 3' wide in 8 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -20°F.
DAWN'S CHORUS: A Knap Hill deciduous azalea. 'Strawberry Ice' x 'Persil'. Cross (1968), raised, and introduced (1984) by Stan Sorenson, Homestead Nurseries, Ltd., Clayburn, B.C., Canada. Buds splashed with Scarlet 19/3 (H.C.C.), frilled, very attractive. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped 3" x 3", with 5 wavy lobes, fragrant, Venetian Pink 420/3, tinted white, with yellow splash in dorsal lobe sector. Calyx ", light green. Truss 5" across x 4" high, dome-shaped, with 12 flowers. Very free flowering. Leaves 3-3" x 1-1" or 4-4" x 1" (variable), near elliptic to narrowly elliptic or very narrowly elliptic (4:1), acute (knobbed), narrowly cuneate, convex, glossy, sparsely setose (with lens), ciliate, Spinach Green o960, under surface with a few setae along midrib, and midrib and veins pubescent (both visible with lens). Fall leaves red, purple with yellow. Plant rounded, branching well, 5' x 5' in 10 years. Blooms in early April. Hardy to at least -20°F.
DIMSDALE: A Linwood hardy evergreen azalea. Nellie (U.S. Plant Patent #2021, 1961; an unregistered Linwood hybrid) x 'Opal'. Cross (1970), raised, and introduced (1982) by G. Albert Reid, Linwood, NJ. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, with 5+5 frilled lobes (hose-in-hose), Red Purple Group 68A (Roseine Purple), with 67B dorsal spotting. Calyx whorl 1" long. 6-7 stamens. Inflorescence 3" across x 1" high, dome-shaped, 3-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held well through the winter, 1-1" x -", narrowly obovate to nearly elliptic, mucronate, cuneate, concave, glossy, Yellow Green Group 146A, ciliate, moderately setose on both surfaces (with lens). Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 3' x 3' in 12 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
EVELYN HART: A Linwood hardy evergreen azalea. Nellie (U.S. Plant Patent #2021, 1961; an unregistered Linwood hybrid) x 'Opal'. Cross (1970), raised, and introduced (1982) by G. Albert Reid, Linwood, NJ. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped 1" across x 1" long, with 16-20 wavy lobes (hose-in-hose, double), Red Purple Group 68B (Roseine Purple), no markings. Calyx whorl " long. No stamens. Inflorescence 3" across x 1" high, dome-shaped, with 3-5 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held well through winter, 3 cm. x 1 - 2 cm., obovate to oblanceolate to elliptic, flat, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, ciliate, Green Group 137A, sparsely setose on both surfaces (with lens). GEORGE SCHOOL: A Linwood hardy evergreen azalea. Nellie (U.S. Plant Patent #2021, 1961; an unregistered Linwood hybrid) x 'Opal'. Cross (1970), raised and introduced (1982) by G. Albert Reid, Linwood, NJ. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, with 5+5 wavy to somewhat frilled lobes (hose-in-hose), Red Group 55A shading to 55C in throat (both Neyron Rose), with prominent Red Purple Group 61 C (Tyrian Purple) blotch of spotting in dorsal 3 lobe sector. Calyx whorl 1" long. 8-10 stamens. Floriferous. Inflorescence 4" across x 2" high, dome-shaped, 3-5-flowered. Leaves held well through winter, 1-1" x -", narrowly obovate to elliptic, flat, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, ciliate, Yellow Green Group 146A, both surfaces sparsely setose (with lens). JOHN BROCKETT: A Linwood hardy evergreen azalea. Nellie (U.S. Plant Patent #2021, 1961; an unregistered Linwood hybrid) x 'Opal'. Cross (1970), raised, and introduced (1982) by G. Albert Reid, Linwood, NJ. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1" across x 1" long, with 5+5, wavy lobes (semi-double), Red Purple Group 61 D (Rose Bengal), 68C (Roseine Purple) in throat, with prominent blotch of spotting 57D in dorsal lobes' sectors. Calyx ", Red Purple Group 61. 0-3 stamens. Inflorescence 4" across x 2" high, dome-shaped, 3-7-flowered. Free flowering. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 1" across x 1" long, with 5+5+5 wavy lobes (hose-in-hose, double), Red Group 54B (Spinel Red), with minor dorsal spotting Red Purple Group 67B (Fuschia Purple). Calyx whorl ". No stamens. Inflorescence 2" across x 1" high, 2-flowered. Floriferous. Albert Reid, Linwood, NJ. Flowers openly funnel-shaped 2" across x 1" long, with 5+5 wavy lobes (hose-in-hose), Red Group 52C (Carmine Rose), with heavy Red Purple Group 57C (Rose Bengal) spotting in dorsal 3 lobe sector. Calyx whorl 1". 5-7 stamens. Inflorescence 2-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held well through winter, 1" x 7/16-", elliptic to near narrowly obovate, flat, mucronate, cuneate, ciliate, glossy, Yellow Green Group 146A, sparsely setose on dorsal surface, rarely on under surface (with lens). LUXURY ROSE: An evergreen azalea. 'Roberta Ann' x 'Girard's Pink. Cross (1972), raised, and introduced by Peter E. Girard, Sr., Girard Nurseries, Geneva, OH. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2" across, 5+5+5 (hose-in-hose), wavy lobes, Red Group 52B (Carmine) with no markings. 3-5 stamens. Pistils vary in size. Calyx ", Green Group 139D. Flower cluster 3-4" across, 3-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 1-1⅞" x ⅞", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, flat, acute with apiculus, narrowly cuneate, glossy, Green Group 139A, ciliate, considerable long setae on both surfaces, heavier on bottom. Plant upright, branching moderately with stiff branches, 20" tall x 15" wide in 5 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -5°F.
PAPRIKA SPICED: 'Hotei' x Lester Brandt hybrid of unknown parents called Tropicana. Cross (1971) by E.C. Brockenbrough, M.D., Bellevue, WA. Raised (from seedling) and introduced (1982) by Bernard V. Nelson, Sedro-Woolley, WA. Buds orange red. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 4" across x 2" long, with 6 wavy to frilled lobes, lobe edges Yellow White Group 158D shading through Yellow Group 11 D (Empire Yellow) to Yellow Orange Group 15D (Chrome Yellow), heavily spotted on dorsal 3 lobes and to a lesser degree on lower 3, Orange Red Group 32B (Nasturtium Red). Calyx leafy to 1", colored as corolla (together with spotting). Truss 6" across x 5" high, ball-shaped, with 12-14 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 3-4" x 1-1", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, dull, glabrous. Yellow Green Group 146A. Plant broad, rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well, 3' tall x 4' wide in 12 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 5°F.
RAPUNZEL: A Knap Hill azalea. 'Golden Sunset' x nameless ruffled yellow seedling. Cross (1968), raised, and introduced by Stan E. Sorenson, Homestead Nurseries, Ltd., Clayburn, B.C., Canada. Buds fringed, greenish-yellow. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped to widely funnel-shaped, 3" across x 3" long, with 6-9 wavy and frilled lobes, with prominent, petal-like, modified stamens (1 to several per flower), fragrant, Naples Yellow 503 (H.C.C.) shaded with Barium Yellow 403, with inconsistent, light orange spotting (ray-like) in dorsal lobe(s) sector. 0-5 stamens. Stigma green. Calyx " light greenish-yellow. Truss 5" across x 4" tall, dome-shaped, somewhat flat, with 12 flowers. Leaves 3-4" x 1⅝"-1", near elliptic to narrowly obovate, margin undulate, acute (knobbed), cuneate, glossy, Spinach Green o960/1, with widely scattered setae, ciliate, under surface with pubescent midrib, midrib and veins with scattered setae (all visible with lens), in fall variably bright orange, red, purple. SATAN'S CHOICE: A deciduous azalea (Knap Hill type) of unknown parents. Cross (1970), raised, and introduced (1984) by Stan Sorenson, Homestead Nurseries, Ltd., Clayburn, B.C., Canada. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 2" long, with 7-8 (up to 10) (semi-double), wavy to frilled lobes and inner petals that are variably twisted, ruffled, and/or reflexed, with no fragrance, Fire Red 15/1 (H.C.C.) shaded to Saturn Red 13/2 and tinted Apricot 609/1, with dorsal flare Marigold Orange 11/1. Calyx ", reddish. Stigma green. No stamens. Truss 5" across x 3" high, dome-shaped with 12-18 flowers. Leaves 3-3" x 1-1", elliptic, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, somewhat bullate, ciliate, sparsely setose (with lens), Spinach Green o960, under surface with a few setae along midrib, and midrib and veins pubescent (all seen with lens). Fall leaves a metallic bronzy brown. Plant broad, branching moderately, 3' tall x 5' wide in 10 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -20°F.
SPICY NUTMEG: R. fortunei x unknown. Cross (1970) by Maurice E. Hall, Bridge-water, MA. Seedling raised and introduced (1980) by Edward J. Brown, Lakeville, MA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5-7 wavy lobes, very fragrant, Red Purple Group 69A, with 59C rays and peripheral spotting in throat below 2 dorsal lobes. Stamens minute. Calyx negligible. Truss 7" across x 6" tall, lax, with 8 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 5-6" x 2", near narrowly elliptic, flat, mucronate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Yellow Green Group 146A. Plant broad (yet upright growing), branching well with arching branches, 8' tall x 10' wide in 13 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least -20°F.
THOMAS ROSE: A Linwood hardy evergreen azalea. Nellie (U.S. Plant Patent #2021, 1961; an unregistered Linwood hybrid) x 'Opal'. Cross (1970), raised, and introduced (1982) by G. Albert Reid, Linwood, NJ. Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, with 5+5+5 wavy lobes (hose-in-hose, double), Red Group 47C (Delft Rose), with Red Purple Group 60B dorsal spotting. Calyx whorl 1". No stamens. Inflorescence 2-flowered. Floriferous. Leaves held well through winter, 2-3 cm. x 1-1 cm., elliptic to somewhat narrowly obovate, flat, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, ciliate, Yellow Green Group 146A, dorsal surface moderately setose, under surface sparsely setose (with lens). Plant upright, rounded, branching well, 2' x 2' in 12 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.
TUSCARORA: 'America' x R. maximum . Cross (before 1968) by Jack Finkelstein, Teaneck, NJ. Raised (after 1968 from seedling) and introduced by Carl G. Heller, M.D., Poulsbo, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 7 cm. across x 5 cm. long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, Red Group 47A (Currant Red), with 46A spotting on dorsal and part of adjacent 2 lobes. Calyx negligible. Truss 15 cm. x 15 cm., ball-shaped, with 10 flowers. Leaves held 3+ years, 13-20 cm. x 4.5-6 cm., narrowly elliptic, acute with apiculus, cuneate, glabrous, between Green Group 141B and Yellow Green Group 147A, with very slight, patchy, light ochre indumentum that is not too visible without lens. Plant broad, branching well with stiff branches, 7' tall x 8' wide in 15 years. Blooms in mid-late June. Hardy to at least 10°F.
