Color designations below refer to the Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 1966, unless otherwise stated. When R.H.S. Colour Chart (1966) numbers are used, the color names preceding these numbers are those of the Universal Color Language (ULC) or Inter-Society Color Council-National Bureau of Standards (ISCC-NBS).

The following list contains names of North American hybrids registered during the period ending July 31, 1986.

'ATHANASIUS':  Vireya. [ R. laetum x ( R. lochiae x R. macgregoriae )] x R. javanicum . Cross (1973) by Arthur Headlam, Melbourne, Australia; raised and named by Peter Sullivan, San Francisco, CA; described and registered by William A. Moynier, Los Angeles, CA. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 1¾" across x 1½" high, 8-11 per truss, 5-lobed, evenly rounded margins. Vivid reddish orange (30B). Truss dome-shaped, 5" across x 2½" high. No calyx. Leaves held 2 years, 4" x 2", elliptic, flat, upper surface dull, moderate olive green (137A), under surface moderate yellow green (146C) with tiny, closely-spaced, tan scales. Plant broad, rounded, moderately-branched, 22" high x 26" wide in 9 years from cutting. Blooms August to March. Hardy to at least 32°F.

'BRIGHT PROSPECT':  Elepidote. 'Scintillation' x R. haematodes (or haematodes hybrid). Cross (1958) made at Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA; raised, introduced, and registered by Tyler Arboretum, Lima, PA; named by John C. Wister; described by Gertrude S. Wister, Swarthmore, PA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 2" long, 11 per truss, 5-6 evenly rounded lobes. Color: (Nickerson Color Fan, AHC, 1959) deep purplish pink (7.5RP6/12) with prominent strong purplish red (10RP4/12) spotted blotch; reverse has a narrow strong purplish red (10RP4/12) stripe down each lobe. Truss ball-shaped, 5" wide x 4" high. Calyx: upper lobe ¾", often re-curved, others minute; yellowish and strong purplish pink. Leaves held 2 years, 4½" x 2", elliptic, slightly wavy margins, apiculate, rounded to cuneate, glossy, upper surface medium olive green (7.5CY4/4), under surface light yellow green dulled (7.5CY9/4). Plant rounded, moderately-branched, 6' high x 7' wide in 20 years from seed. Blooms mid-May. Hardy to at least -5°F.

'CALSAP':  Elepidote. 'Catalgla' x 'Sappho'. Cross (1965), raised, introduced, registered by M. W. Michener, Franklin, PA. Described by Thomas L. Ring, Bellaire, OH. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 1½" long, 18 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Color: (RHSCC 1986) white with prominent dark red blotch (187A edged 187C), reverse lightly flushed very pale purple (69B). Buds very pale purple (69B). Truss conical, 5" wide x 4½" high. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 5½" x 1⅞", convex, oblong, apiculate, cuneate, smooth, dull. Plant 4' high x 6' wide in 12 years from cutting. Blooms early mid-season. Plant hardy to at least -35°F, bud hardy to at least -25°F.

'CANADIAN MAUVE':  Elepidote. 'Rocket' x selected, unnamed clone of ('Catalgla' x 'Lady Bessborough'). Cross (1974), raised, registered by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario; introduced by Clay's Nurseries, Langley, British Columbia. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, petals cut half way to base, 2" across x 1⅝" long, 15 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy and frilled margins. Moderate purplish pink (78D) with strong reddish purple (78B) stripes on reverse; buds vivid reddish purple (78A). Dome-shaped truss, 4⅜" x 4⅜". Free flowering, slightly fragrant. Calyx 1/32", light yellow green (154D). Leaves held 3 years, 5" x 2⅜", elliptic, convex, obtuse, rounded, wrinkled, semi-glossy. Plant spreading, semi-dwarf, 16" high x 20" wide in 12 years from seed. Blooms mid-May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -25°F.

'CARRIE AMANDA':  Evergreen azalea. 'Elsie Lee' x 'Marian Lee'. Cross (1973) and named by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder, Evansville, IN. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1½" long, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong purplish pink (55B) edging (c ½" wide), with white throat and dark rose spotting on dorsal lobe. (Note: Prominent rose edging unstable on young plants grown from cuttings, but will revert with age.) Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 1¾" x ¾", broadly elliptic to narrowly obovate, mucronate, cuneate, dull, dark green, both surfaces hairy. Plant broad, rounded, well-branched, 15" high x 24" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least -15°F.

'CHERRY DELIGHT':  Evergreen azalea. 'Ward's Ruby' x 'Hahn's Red'. Cross (1975), raised, introduced, and registered by Richard Mauritsen, (Kent Nursery), Kent, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, 1-4 per truss, 5-lobed, evenly rounded margins. Vivid red (52A). Calyx 1/16", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 1" x ¾", broadly elliptic to elliptic, convex, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, dark bluish green (131A), hairy. Plant upright, rounded, well-branched, 20" high x 16" wide in 3 years from cutting. Blooms in early April. Hardy to at least -5°F.

'CRISTO REY':  Vireya. ( R. macgregoriae x R. zoelleri) x ( R. laetum x R. zoelleri ). Cross (1971), raised, and named by Peter Sullivan, San Francisco, CA; described and registered by William A. Moynier, Los Angeles, CA. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 2¼" across x 2" long, 5 evenly rounded lobes, 6-8 flowers per truss. Vivid orange (28B) changing gradually to brilliant orange yellow (21B) in throat. Truss dome-shaped, 6" across x 3" high. Free flowering. No calyx. Leaves held 4 years, 3¼" x 1½', elliptic, concave, acute, cuneate, upper surface smooth, dark yellowish green (139A), under surface yellow green with tiny, closely-spaced, tan scales. Plant upright, well-branched, 26" high x 24" wide in 8 years from cutting. Blooms May to September. Plant hardy to at least 32°F.

'DAD'S KILLER':  Elepidote. Parentage unknown. Cross (1972) and raised by Richard Mauritsen (Kent Nursery); named, described, and registered by Steve Mauritsen; introduced by Kent Nursery, Kent, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 3" long, 12-16 per truss, 6-lobed, wavy margins. Deep pink (52C) with strong red (50A) spotting in throat. No stamens present. Dome-shaped truss, 8" across x 5" high. Calyx 1/16", reddish green. Leaves held 2 years, 4" x 1½", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, dull, dark bluish green (131A). Plant upright, moderately-branched, 2' high x 1' wide in 3 years from cutting. Hardy to at least 0°F.

'DAREDEVIL':  Evergreen azalea. 'Ward's Ruby' x 'Hahn's Red'. Cross (c 1972) and raised by Richard Mauritsen (Kent Nursery); named, described, and registered by Steve Mauritsen; introduced by Kent Nursery, Kent, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1¼" long, 1-3 per truss, 5 evenly rounded lobes. Vivid red (52A). Terminal flower cluster 2-3" across x 2-3" high, composed of 2-4 trusses. Calyx 1/16", green. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 1" x ½", elliptic to lanceolate, revolute, apiculate, cuneate, dull, light green. Plant upright, broad, well-branched, 24" high x 18" wide in 3 years from cutting. Blooms mid-April to May. Hardy to at least 0°F.

'DAVID REYNOLDS':  Evergreen azalea. 'Purple Splendor' x 'Vuyk's Scarlet'. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder, Evansville, IN. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1½" long, 5-lobed, frilled margins. Deep purplish pink (68A) with dark red spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 1¼" x ½", elliptic, flat, mucronate, cuneate, dull, dark green, both surfaces hairy. Red stems in winter. Plant upright, rounded, well-branched, 24" high x 24" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least -15°F.

'DENALI':  Elepidote. 'Vanessa Pastel' x 'Pink Walloper' [an unregistered Lem hybrid: 'Anna' x 'Marinus Koster']. Cross (1973), raised, introduced, and registered by James A. Elliott, Astoria, OR. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 2½" long, 12-15 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Color: (H.C.C.) tyrian rose (24) shading to (24/1) with burnt orange (014/1) spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx small, light pink. Ball-shaped truss, 7" across x 6" high. Leaves held 3 years, 7" x 3", elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, smooth, glossy, parsley green (00962); under surface fern green (0862/1). Plant upright, broad, rounded, well-branched, 7' high x 7' wide in 11 years from seed. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least 10°F.

'DOCTOR HENRY SCHROEDER':  Evergreen azalea. 'Mildred Mae' x 'Avalanche' (Domoto hybrid). Synonym: 'Dr. H.R. Schroeder'. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder, Evansville, IN. Flowers open-funnel-campanulate, 2½" across x 2" long, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong purplish pink (55B) with narrow edging of dark rose, and light brown spotting on lower portion of dorsal lobe. Calyx ½", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 3" x 1", narrowly elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, dull, dark green, under surface hairy. Plant upright, rounded, well-branched, 24" high x 18" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least -15°F.

'DOCTOR JAMES DIPPEL':  Evergreen azalea. 'Purple Splendor' x 'Vuyk's Scarlet'. Cross (1973), by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder, Evansville, IN. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2½' across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes. Vivid reddish orange (33A) with dark orange red spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 1½" x 11/16", elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, dark green. Plant rounded, well-branched, 15" high x 20" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least -15°F.

'DRAGON LADY':  Evergreen azalea. 'Ward's Ruby' x 'Hahn's Red'. Cross (1975), raised, introduced, and registered by Richard Mauritsen (Kent Nursery), Kent, WA. Described by Steve Mauritsen. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1¼" long, 1-4 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Vivid reddish orange (42A) with dark red spotting in throat. Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 1½" x ¾", elliptic to broadly elliptic, flat, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, dark bluish green (133A). Plant rounded, well-branched, 12" high x 18" wide in 3 years from cutting. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -5°F.

'EARL WEBSTER':  Evergreen azalea. Seed parent: selected form of R. kaempferi ; pollen parent not recorded. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder, Evansville, IN. Flowers rotate-campanulate, 1½" across x 1¼" long, with 5 wavy lobes. Light purplish pink (55C) with light brown spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering. Leaves almost deciduous in winter, 1" x ½*, narrowly obovate, flat, mucronate, cuneate, dull, dark green, under surface hairy. Plant upright, broad, well-branched, 30" high x 24" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least -15°F.

'ELAINE BEHRING':  Elepidote. 'Catalgla' x R. yakushimanum . Cross (1975), raised, registered by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario; introduced by Clay's Nurseries, Langley, British Columbia. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2⅜" across x 2" long, 17 per truss, 5-lobed, frilled margins. Moderate purplish pink (65A), dorsal lobe pale purplish pink (65D) with heavy moderate red (185B) spotting. Dome-shaped truss, 4¾" x 4¾". Free flowering. Calyx 1/16", light yellow green (154D). Leaves held 3 years, 4¾" x 2", elliptic, convex, acute, cordate, smooth. Plant upright, 28" high x 16" wide in 11 years from seed. Blooms mid-May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -25°F.

'ELIZABETH ANN SETON':  Vireya. ('Dr. Herman Sleumer' x 'Pink Delight') x ('Pink Delight' x R. jasminiflorum ). Cross (1976), raised, introduced, and registered by Peter Sullivan, San Francisco, CA. Flower narrowly tubular funnel-shaped, 1½" across x 1½" long, 12-16 per truss, 5 evenly rounded lobes. Basic color very light pink; throat, edging (1½" wide), and reverse are medium pink; rounded pattern of pink rays. Truss 4½" across x 3½" high, slightly lax. Free flowering, somewhat fragrant. Leaves held 8-10 years, 3" x ⅞", elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, upper surface glossy, darker green; under surface lighter green with red/brown rib and tiny brown scales. Plant upright, rounded, well-branched, 32" high x 26" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms February through June. Hardy to at least 28° to 30°F.

'ELIZA HYATT': Evergreen azalea. 'Elsie Lee' x 'Robin Hill Frosty'. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder, Evansville, IN. Flowers double, widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1¼" long, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Color varies from solid white to pale purplish pink (55D and 56C) with faint green spotting in throat. No normal stamens present. Calyx ⅛", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 1-3/16" x 9/16", narrowly obovate, flat, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, dark green. Plant broad, rounded, well-branched, 24" high x 24" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least-15°F.

'EMMANUEL':  Vireya. ( R. zoelleri x R. javanicum ) x 'Dr. Herman Sleumer'. Cross (1975), raised, and named by Peter Sullivan, San Francisco, CA; described and registered by William A. Moynier, Los Angeles, CA. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 2¼" long, 5-7 wavy-edged lobes, 8-11 flowers per truss. Strong red (39A) changing gradually to light yellow (11B) in throat, reverse lighter red. Truss dome-shaped, 5½" across x 3½" high. No calyx. Leaves held 4 years, 4" x 1½", elliptic, flat with wavy margins, acute, cuneate, upper surface glaucous, dark yellowish green (139A); under surface moderate yellow green (147B) with tiny, closely-spaced, tan scales. Plant broad, moderately-branched, 21" high x 26" wide in 7 years from cutting. Blooms March to July, and September to December. Hardy to at least 32°F.

'FRANK ARSEN':  Evergreen azalea. Parentage unknown. Synonym: P25-6. Cross and raised by Robert Gartrell, Wyckoff, NJ. (Note: Not one of the Robin Hill Group.) Named by John E. Boeggeman, West Nyack, NY; described by Patricia Walton, Upper Saddle River, NJ; introduced and registered by L. Malcolm Clark, West Caldwell, NJ. Flowers hose-in-hose, tubular funnel-shaped, 1¾" across x 1⅝" long, 1-3 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong pink (49A) with pale yellowish pink (36D) throat. Calyx 1¼", same color as corolla. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 1" x ½", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, moderate yellow green (146B), both surfaces hairy. Plant upright, rounded, moderately-branched, 32" high x 38" wide in 10 years from cutting. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least -8°F.

'FREDRICK GEODFRIED PESTE':  Elepidote. ( R. yakushimanum x 'Corona') x R. haematodes . Cross (1971) by Fred Peste, raised by Fred and Lillian Peste, named by Lillian Peste, described and registered by Sharon Peste Johnston, all Shelton, WA. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2" across x 1¾" long, 10-11 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Deep yellowish pink (47C) changing to moderate yellowish pink (37C), strong red (39A) spotting in upper lobes, light yellowish pink (27B) ray down center of each lobe (very prominent when flower changes color); buds strong red (50A). Flat truss, 4½" across x 2½" high. Free flowering. Calyx 1¼", deep pink (48A). Leaves held 3 years, 3" x 1⅛", elliptic, convex, acute, cuneate, smooth; moderate olive green (147A) with heavy indumentum, moderate orange yellow (164B). Plant broad, rounded, dwarf, 20" high x 30" wide in 14 years from seed. Blooms early May. Hardy to at least 0°F.

'FROSTY LEE':  Evergreen azalea. 'Elsie Lee' x 'Robin Hill Frosty'. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder, Evansville, IN. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1½" long, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Light purplish pink (55C) with rose spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 1½" x ½", narrowly elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, dark green, under surface hairy. Plant broad, rounded, well-branched, 24" high x 24" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least -15°F.

'GEORGE HYATT':  Evergreen azalea. 'Purple Splendor' x 'Vuyk's Scarlet'. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder, Evansville, IN. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1¼" long 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong purplish red (64C) with dark red spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 1¼" x ⅜", oblanceolate, flat, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, dark green, both surfaces hairy. Plant rounded, well-branched, 18" high x 18" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least -15°F.

'GOLDEN GODDESS':  Elepidote. ('King of Shrubs' x 'Crest') x 'Lionel's Triumph'. Cross (1973, ARS seed lot 74-476) by Cecil Smith, Aurora, OR; raised, introduced, and registered by Clarence R. Burlingame, Hoquiam, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4¼" across x 2" long, 18 per truss, 6-lobed, wavy margins. Color: (Wilson's Color by RHS) empire yellow (603/1)with empire yellow (603) spotting in throat of upper lobes, and rays of carrot red (612/3) on reverse. Truss ball-shaped, 8" across x 7" high. Leaves held 2 years, oblong, mucronate, rounded, upper surface smooth, spinach green (o960), under surface (o906/3). Plant upright, moderately-branched, 6' high x 5' wide in 11 years from seed. Blooms late April. Hardy to at least 5°F.

'HEINRICH PEIFFER':  Elepidote. R. smirnowii x R. yakushimanum 'Mist Maiden'. Cross (1972), raised, registered by Rudy Behring, St. Catharines, Ontario; introduced by Clay's Nurseries, Langley, British Columbia. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3V8" across x 1%" long, 9 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy and frilled margins. Light purplish pink (68D) with gold-green spotting dorsal lobe, deep purplish pink (68A) tips and reverse edging; buds deep purplish pink (68A). Dome-shaped truss, 5½" wide x 5" high. Free flowering. Calyx 1/16", deep pink (51B). Leaves held 4 years, 5½" x 1¼", oblong, acute, cuneate upper surface smooth, glossy; under surface heavily indumented, white on young leaves, pale orange yellow (165D) on 2 year old leaves, yellowish white (156D) on older leaves. Plant spreading, dwarf, 10" high x 20" wide in 14 years from seed. Blooms late May. Plant and bud hardy to -25°F.

'HENRY ROLAND':  Evergreen azalea. 'Purple Splendor' x 'Vuyk's Scarlet'. Synonym: 'Roland'. Cross (1973) by Henry R. Schroeder; raised, introduced, and registered by Stephen Schroeder, Evansville, IN. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1½" long, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Deep pink (52C) with rose/red spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx ¼", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 1 year, 1-9/16" x 9/16", narrowly elliptic, flat, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, dark green, under surface hairy. Plant broad, rounded, well-branched, 18" high x 24" wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms in late April. Hardy to at least -15°F.

'LAST TANGO':  Evergreen azalea. 'Ward's Ruby' x 'Hahn's Red'. Cross (1975), raised, introduced, and registered by Richard Mauritsen (Kent Nursery), Kent, WA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2¼" across x 1¼" long, 1-5 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Vivid red (46C). Calyx 1/16", light green. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 1½" x ¾", elliptic to broadly elliptic, convex, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, dark bluish green (131A), hairy. Plant broad, well-branched, 10" high x 18" wide in 3 years from cutting. Blooms in early April. Hardy to at least -5°F.

'MARALYN GILLESPIE':  Elepidote. Probably of Dexter hybrid (Fortunei Subseries) parentage. Synonym: 'Gillespie #3'. Cross (1958), raised, introduced, and registered by Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College, described by Gertrude S. Wister, Swarthmore, PA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2" long, 9 per truss, 7-lobed, wavy margins. Color: (Nickerson Color Fan, AHC, 1959) pale purplish pink (2.5RP9/2) flushed light purplish pink (2.5RP8/5), with strong reddish purple (2.5RP4/10) central solid blotch and two solid flares blending into irregular flares on all lobes. Flares are as long as 1¼" on upper lobes, and ½" on lower lobes. Bud color deep purplish pink (2.5RP6/10). Truss ball-shaped, 4" across x 5" high. Calyx ⅛" to not visible, light yellow green. Leaves held 2 years, 4" x 1¾", elliptic, slightly wavy margins, apiculate, cuneate to rounded, upper surface smooth, moderate olive green (5GY4/3), under surface grayed light yellow green. Plant broad, rounded, well-branched, 6' high x 8' wide in 11 years from cutting. Blooms early May. Hardy to at least -5°F.

'MARCIA JOY ELLIS':  Elepidote. 'Purple Lace' x R. yakushimanum . Cross (1976) by Fred Peste, raised by Fred and Lillian Peste, named by Lillian Peste, described and registered by Sharon Peste Johnston, all Shelton, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3¼" across x 2" long, 15 per truss, 5-lobed, frilled edges. Bud color deep purplish pink (67C). Flower color light purplish pink (65B) with moderate purplish pink (65A) edging (c ¼" wide); light olive (152B) spotting in dorsal lobe; reverse pale purplish pink (65D). Truss dome-shaped, 6" across x 5" high. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 3½" x 1⅜", elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate; upper surface smooth, moderate olive green (147A); under surface moderate yellow green (147C). Plant upright, semi-dwarf, well-branched, 32" high x 34" wide in 9 years from seed. Blooms mid-May. Hardy to at least 0°F.

'MARLENE PESTE':  Elepidote. ( R. yakushimanum x 'Corona') x R. haematodes .
