For more than thirty years, at Brodick Castle Gardens, you cared for and greatly expanded one of the world's finest collections of rhododendrons, and you have shared your expertise with lovers of rhododendrons from the four corners of the earth. With great generosity, you provided seed, pollen and cuttings to the American Rhododendron Society, the Rhododendron Species Foundation, and to countless gardens and individuals in many lands. Your hospitality and help have been freely given to all; your vast knowledge and your dedication have inspired others. It is with great pride that the American Rhododendron Society present the Silver Medal to John Basford. May 8, 1996 Oban, Scotland.
