American Rhododendron Society Plant Registry

The following rhododendron and azalea names, submitted through the North American registrar, were approved and added to the International Rhododendron Register prior to February 1, 2000 by the Royal Horticultural Society, International Registration Authority for the genus Rhododendron . Names conform to the rules and recommendations of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants - 1995 .

Color numbers refer to the RHS Colour Chart unless noted otherwise. Accompanying color names are taken from A Contribution toward Standardization of Color Names in Horticulture , R.D. Huse and K.L Kelly, edited by D.H. Voss (ARS, 1984).

Parents of a plant are reported in the conventional order: (seed parent x pollen parent). Abbreviations are used where appropriate: H = hybridized by, G = grown to first flower by, R = raised by, S = selected by, N = named by, I = introduced by, REG = registered by; dates are enclosed in parentheses immediately following the activity.

Metric conversions of flower and leaf measurements are reported in 5mm (0.2") increments for dimensions greater than 25mm (1").

'Blue Flame': Deciduous azalea. (Derived from the Choptank River Hybrid Group with possible admixture of calendulaceum ). G (1988), S (1988), N, and REG (1999): Laura Chappell, Lebanon, CT; I (1996): Chappell Nursery, Lebanon, CT. Fls tubular funnel-shaped, 0.9" (23mm) long x 0.4" (10mm) wide, 5-lobed, orange in bud, opening orange throughout; lightly scented. Lvs elliptic, cuneate base, acuminate apex, wavy and down curved margins, 1.4" (35mm) x 0.5"-0.6" (c 15mm); semi-glossy, glaucous, bluish green above, silvery hairy above and below. Shrub 2' (0.6m) tall x 2' (0.6m) wide in 12 years, dense plant habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least -25°F (-32°C). Early July.

'Granny Cee': Evergreen azalea. ('Moonbeam' (Glenn Dale) x Unnamed hybrid (Code ST-1-A)). H (1989), G (1993), N (1998), and REG (1999): William L. Clagett, Derwood, MD; I (1999): White's Nursery, Germantown, MD. Fls 2-3/truss, openly funnel-shaped, hose-in-hose, with some petaloid stamens, 2" (50mm) long x 3.25" (80mm) wide, 5+5+(0-4) very wavy-edged lobes; buds white with a chartreuse base, opening inside white with random stripes of deep purplish pink (73A) and with inconspicuous chartreuse spotting on dorsal lobes; outside white with (73A) stripes and with a chartreuse base; sporting freely to solid strong purplish pink (68B) inside and out. Green calyx lacking. Lvs oblong, flat, cuneate base, broadly acute apex, 2.25" (55mm) x 0.7" (18mm); dull, moderate olive green (147A) above, with white hairs below. Shrub 3' (0.9m) tall x 1.7' (0.5m) wide in 10 years; intermediate habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least -8°F (-22°C). Mid-late May.

'Joan Smith': Deciduous azalea. ( R. prunifolium x R. x gladwynense ). H (1972?): Hal Bruce, Winterthur Museum and Gardens, Winterthur, DE; G (1987): Polly Hill, Hockessin, DE; N (1999) and REG (1999): Polly Hill Arboretum, West Tisbury, MA. FIs funnel-shaped with a long, narrow tube abruptly expanding into limb, 1.5" (40mm) long x 2" (50mm) wide, with 5 flat-edged lobes; a blend of vivid to strong reddish orange (40B-C), deep to moderate yellowish pink (39B-C), and strong yellowish pink (38A), with (38A) prevailing. Calyx 1 mm long, strong yellowish pink (38A). Lvs elliptic, cuneate base, broadly acute apex, 2.75" (70mm) x 1.4" (35mm); semi-glossy, moderate olive green (137A) to moderate yellow green (137C) above, hairless. Shrub 6'-7' (1.8-2.1m) tall in 25 years, intermediate habit. Plant hardy to at least 0°F (-18°C). August-September. (Note: R. x gladwynense may now be better treated as Gladwynense Group.)

'Ruthy's Red': Evergreen azalea. ['Christina' (Vuykiana) x 'Shinnyo-no-tsuki']. H (1989), G (1993), N, and REG (1999): William L. Clagett, Derwood, MD; I (2000): White's Nursery, Germantown, MD. Fls 2-3/truss, openly funnel-shaped, hose-in-hose, with occasional petaloid stamens, c 1.6" (40mm) long x 3" (75mm) wide, mainly 5+5 flat-edged lobes; strong red (41B) in bud, opening strong red (41B) throughout, the inside with random patches of very pale pink, and the dorsal lobe lightly flushed deep rose purple. Calyx 4mm long, pale green. Lvs obovate, cuneate base, obtuse apex, 1" (25mm) x 0.6" (15mm); semi-glossy, moderate olive green (147A) above, with white hairs below. Shrub 1.7' (0.5m) tall x 1.25' (0.4m) wide in 5 years; open habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least -8°F (-22°C). Mid-late May.
