Notes from the Editor

The Journal of Career and Technical Education can be obtained in both paper and electronic form. This Spring 2002 issue (18-2) marks the thirty-sixth issue of JCTE in print and the fourteenth issue currently on-line. The printed journal is mailed to members and other subscribers around the world and is indexed in ERIC. The electronic journal is available worldwide on the Internet and can be accessed at the following case sensitive URL:


Providing JCTE as an electronic journal as well as a paper one means a whole new set of responsibilities for the editor, one of which is making sure that the files are properly formatted in order to be converted to PDF and/or HTML. This also will call for authors paying closer attention to using the proper formatting features of the word processor. Prior to Volume 16, Number 2, the Journal of Career and Technical Education was published as the Journal of Vocational and Technical Education. This is my first issue as editor of the Journal of Career and Technical Education. It has been abeen a big adjustment for me to learn the process involved in publishing a professional journal. Thank you for your patience and I am sorry for the delay in printing my first issue. I also appreciate the assistance of the reviewers who read the articles considered for this issue. It would not be possible to publish a refereed journal such as the Journal of Career and Technical Education with a distinguished group od reviewers. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the following colleagues for giving their time and expertise in reviewing the manuscripts for this issue of the journal. The JCTE includes articles on a variety of topics in career and technical education. This issue provides readers with articles empha-sizing results of quantitative and qualitative research.

Karen Lord Rutter, Bettye P. Smith, and Helen Hall share results of a study designed to determine the motivational needs of students enrolled in FCS programs and compare the motivational needs of FCS students who were members and non-members of FHA/HERO, now known as FCCLA. Students responded to 15 items based on the three qualities of achievement, affiliation, and power. Results indicated that students had higher achievement and affiliation scores than power scores. Furthermore, students who were members of FCCLA had higher scores on affiliation and power than nonmembers.

Elaine Adams and Helen Hall offer results from a study that examined business and marketing teachers' attitudes towards cultural pluralism and diversity using the Pluralism and Diversity Attitude Assessment (PADAA). The PADDA consists of 19 statements that are separated into four subscales: appreciate cultural pluralism, value cultural pluralism, implement cultural pluralism, and unconfortable with cultural pluralism. Readers will learn ways to help promote apositive impact on promoting cultural diversity of your children and our workforce during the 21st century.

Through their study, Robert Bozick and Keith MacAllum examine graduates of a manufacturing focused STC program alongside a comparison group in order to detect similarities and differences in their post-high school lives. I believe you will find the results and discussion quite interesting as the authors share their view on how school-to-career programs have potential in preparing students for specific careers. The authors also offer suggestion to consider in planning school-to-career programs.

The article written by Edgar Farmer and Henry O'Lawrence describes differences among the personal, situational, and outcome characteristics of students in Pennsylvania community colleges and two-year proprietary institutions. Specifically, this article describes results of the second phase of the study , which involved surveying a large sample of 3,100 students currently enrolled in postsecondary programs in Pennsylvania. Although this study is oriented to community colleges and two-year proprietary institutions in Pennsylvania, other states may find parts of the research useful if they are studying the nature and performance of postsecondary technical students. The results may provoke a debate for more diversity in student enrollment in community colleges technical fields of study.

The article written by Robert L. Fritz, Barbara Stewart, and Marcella Norwood compares the field-dependence cognitive styles of professionals in purchasing and consumer service and secondary marketing education student. The authors present a number of theoretical and practical recommendation educators should consider when using cognitive styles of learners in planning and implementing educational programs.
