Experimental investigations have been conducted to determine the type of nitride which is formed in Type 304 stainless steel. On the strength of X-ray diffraction and metallographic investigations, it is concluded that nitrogen combines principally with iron in thin alloy forming a combination of iron nitrides: Fe4N, and Fe3N, and Fe2N.
It in thus concluded that the type of nitride formed in an iron base alloy is determined largely by the relative concentrations of nitride forming elements. In Type 304, iron is the major component and consequently iron nitrides are formed although such elements as chromium and manganese may enter the lattice as a substitutional atom.
