Fred Orcutt, 86

Fred Orcutt, former head of the Biology Department, died September 29. He was a professor at Virginia Tech from 1936 until his retirement in 1968.

Orcutt was listed in Who's Who in America from 1962-69, and also was listed in World Who's Who in Science .

A member of many professional and scientific honor societies, Orcutt was co-organizer and president of the Virginia Branch of the American Society for Microbiology and served on the National Council. He also was a charter member of the American Academy of Microbiology. He ran the national office of Phi Sigma Society, the international biological sciences honor society. He also served as a member of the governing board of American Institute of Biological Sciences, editorial board of Journal of Applied Microbiology , and as a participant of the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies.
