To the Editor - March Participants Sought

Spectrum Volume 17 Issue 23 - March 9, 1995

The Women's Month Committee, Womanspace (the Women's Undergraduate Network), and other sponsoring organizations invite your participation in the sixth annual "Take Back the Night" Rally and March to be held Monday, March 27, during Women's Month 1995 at Virginia Tech.

The purpose of the candlelight march--an annual tradition on many campuses across the nation--is to bring together members of the campus and community to protest violence towards women and to promote awareness of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors which perpetuate this violence. Organizers encourage everyone to take an active role in changing our society--a society in which women have reason to fear being out at night alone.

People of all ages should be able to manage the march, which is handicapped-accessible. Women, men, and children are encouraged to march, either as individuals or as part of a group. Percussion instruments are welcome. Participants are asked to bring candles or flashlights, and organizations are invited to bring signs or a group banner in support of "Take Back the Night."

The march will be preceded by a rally with speakers and musicians from both the campus and local community. Participants will gather on the Drillfield in front of Burruss Hall between 7 and 7:30 p.m. The rally will begin at 7:30 p.m., followed by the march at 8 p.m. Participants will return to the Drillfield for a closing song. (The rain location is Colonial Hall in Squires Student Center.)

Sponsoring organizations include the Black Female Coalition, Dean of Students Office, Graduate Student Assembly, League of Women Voters of Montgomery County, MAPs, Montgomery County NOW, Planned Parenthood, SAVES, Virginia Tech Campus Ministers Association, Women's Center, Women's Network, Women's Research Institute, Women's Resource Center of the New River Valley, Women's Studies Program, and YMCA at Virginia Tech.

Please consider marching. If your organization decides to participate as a group and would like to have its name announced at the march, please call Susan Anderson at 951-2013 or 231-8041, or Kristin Vitko at 951-2724 by March 21. We hope to see you at "Take Back the Night!"
