Eight members of Chi Delta Alpha, a service sorority at Virginia Tech, have been recognized for their volunteer work in Newman Library by the Friends of the University Libraries.
Liz Ackermann, who works in the library's Special Collections Department and coordinated the students' efforts, reported to the organization at its April meeting that 38 individual volunteers put in 114 hours in the department during a two-month period. The eight students recognized by the organization worked five or more hours each.
"This past February, Lana Frilles, a student who works here in the library, came to us to ask if we could use the help of volunteers in our department. Of course, we were all thrilled with this offer," Ackermann said.
She said the volunteers completely processed the Appalachian Peoples Service Organization Collection, updated the University Archives Record Groups, bar-coded juvenile literature, helped inventory donated collections of books, filed materials, and helped with mailings and setting up functions for the Friends of the Library.
The students recognized with a membership in the organization were Frilles, Julie Husk, Kate Fuller, Stephanie Gaulding, Leslie Marshal, Sarah Coleman, Kari Pulone, and Jill Meyers.
