By Liz CrumbleyVirginia Tech Spectrum, September 14, 1995
The Virginia Tech Engineering Fundamentals Freshman Design Team placed first at the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) 1995 National Graphics Design Competition held in Anaheim, Calif.
The students designed a mechanical gate opening-and-closing system that can be activated from within a vehicle. Designs for similar systems were submitted by 21 freshman engineering teams from throughout the U.S.
The winning Virginia Tech team members were Maurice Blackwood, Steven Butler, Ken Nehring, and Thurmond Senter. Their faculty advisor was Jim Hardell, assistant professor of engineering fundamentals.
The annual competition is sponsored by the ASEE divisions of Engineering Design Graphics, Freshman Programs, and Design in Engineering Education, as well as corporate sponsors Addison-Wesley and Autodesk.
