INSTRUCTIONAL

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS. Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics . While the assignment corresponding to this position is at Virginia Tech's Northern Virginia Graduate Center, Falls Church, the selected individual will have an opportunity to participate in research and educational programs of the Blacksburg campus. Responsibilities will include teaching courses, advising graduate students, and assisting in development of the Mathematics Department's new Northern Virginia Master's Degree Program in Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics (NOVA PIAM) and the university's interdisciplinary program in Information Systems Technology. The successful candidate must have a strong record of interactions with industrial and/or government research and development organizations. Demonstrated research experience in computational mathematics, scientific computing, optimization methods, mathematical modeling, and control theory is desirable. The selected candidate must possess the ability to conduct creative independent research in applied mathematics and show strong promise for developing as an outstanding teacher. The Mathematics Department and the university's applied mathematics center, the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Mathematics (ICAM), have assembled a faculty group having international prominence in applied and computational mathematics. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in applied mathematics or a related discipline. This position provides the opportunity to have a significant impact on the direction and quality of programs in interdisciplinary applied mathematics in the D.C. area. MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. Research Assistant Professor. Non-tenure track. The department is seeking candidates with a doctorate in materials science and engineering or a related discipline, with B.S./M.S. degrees in physics, electrical engineering, or other related fields of science and engineering. Primary duties for this position include: (a) the candidate should be capable of developing an externally funded research program in materials; (b) the candidate should be experienced in teaching experimental subjects on the processing and characterization of materials; (c) coordinate and supervise the operations of the undergraduate teaching laboratories and common research equipment and facilities in the MSE Department, and establish means to fund renovations and upgrades of these facilities, as well as those of the Instrumentation Cost Center (ICC) within the department; (d) to facilitate the service provided by the ICC to industry throughout Virginia and other states by expediting interaction with the faculty members in the department and affiliated units on campus; (e) to ensure that the MSE Department is in compliance with all OSHA and university safety matters; (f) to aid fiscal assistant in the completion of the yearly fixed-asset verification as required by Virginia Tech. The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills with training in personnel management and be experienced in managing research-laboratory facilities and university-affiliated technology-development centers. Industrial experience and knowledge of the SBIR application process are also very desirable. The position will be filled by Nov. 1, 1996. DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS. Full Professor. With tenure. Focus of area is numerical analysis with emphasis on computational methods for partial differential equations. The successful candidate must possess a strong, continuing record of internationally recognized research in computational mathematics and applications. A proven record of academic leadership, demonstrated by the candidate's encouragement of excellence in research, teaching, graduate-student advising, and postgraduate supervision, is desirable. The Department of Mathematics has strong traditional links with the College of Engineering, and the appointee would be expected to foster and encourage these ties.
