FACULTY JOBS

INSTRUCTIONAL

Department of Civil Engineering. Faculty Position. Tenure-track position in intelligent transportation systems beginning August 1997. Candidates up to the rank of full professor will be considered. The faculty position will be assigned to Virginia Tech's Northern Virginia Center, which is located in Falls Church, approximately 10 miles from Washington, D.C. The successful candidate must have earned a Ph.D. in civil engineering with an academic focus related to intelligent transportation systems. Evidence of strong classroom-instruction experience and significant research accomplishments related to transportation systems is required. Duties include: graduate teaching in transportation-systems engineering, oversight of the department's civil-infrastructure-engineering graduate program in the Northern Virginia region, establishment of a funded-research program in intelligent transportation systems, and active professional service. The individual filling this position will have a joint appointment with the Virginia Tech Center for Transportation Research, one of three Federal Highway Administration Research Centers of Excellence in Intelligent Transportation Systems in the United States. This position is being established as part of a new information-systems technology initiative funded by the Virginia General Assembly in 1996. The individual filling this position will have significant opportunities for collaborative interaction with faculty from civil engineering, electrical/computer engineering, computer sciences, and mathematics, all located at the Northern Virginia Center. Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. Clinical Instructor. Clinical Instructor in Food Animal Production Management Medicine. Responsibilities: Instructional duties will include clinical instruction in the Production Management Medicine Section of the veterinary teaching hospital, including training of residents. Service will include the medical management of individual food-animal patients and participation in continuing-education and Extension programs of the college that deal with food animals. Qualifications include the DVM or equivalent degree. Diplomate status or eligibility or certification examination by a specialty college is desirable. Practice experience with food animals is desirable. Rank will be at the level of clinical instructor, which will require yearly reappointment. Department of Architecture . Assistant or associate professor . Two tenure-track faculty positions. Candidates should be able to teach in beginning and advanced industrial design studios and design theory lectures. Candidates should have an established record of teaching, scholarship, and industry collaborations. Candidates should be able to offer an advanced professional elective course dealing with design products in both physical and digital modeling and demonstration environments. It is desirable that candidates have a record of publications, design work, and teaching experience that contributes to the leadership role of a major educational institution. College of Architecture And Urban Studies. Dean. The dean reports to the senior vice president and provost of the university, is a member of the university's senior administration, and is responsible for the academic leadership and administration of the college. These responsibilities include strategic planning; curriculum development; allocation and administration of resources; appointment, development, and evaluation of faculty and support staff; maintenance of strong alumni relations; the advancement of the college's reputation within the university and among the academic and professional communities across the state, the nation, and around the world; and pursuit of supplemental financial support for both new and existing programs. The successful candidate will have attained national recognition in at least one of the disciplines offered by the college and possess a terminal degree in his or her field; professional licensure or certification is desired if appropriate for the candidate's discipline. Virginia Power Electronic Center (VPEC). Computer System Administrator. In the Bradley Department of Electrical Engineering. The administrator will be responsible for the complete administrative and technical operation of the VPEC Computational facilities equipped with SUN and HP workstations, around 20 PC's, local-area and ethernet networks, laser/color printers, scanners, plotters, and other networked devices. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: overall administration of VPEC workstations, PC's and Macs, peripherals and local-area networks; installation and management of application software on both workstations and PC's; routine hardware maintenance; and technical support for all VPEC members. Minimum qualifications: B.S. in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering, with some experience in computer system administration; and the ability to work independently and effectively with a wide variety of people. With preference for: an M.S. or equivalent, with related work experience, and considerable knowledge of hardware and software, including: SunOS, HP-UX, system administration and accounting under SunOS/Solaris and HP-UX, Microsoft DOS/Windows, Windows NT system/network administration, TCP/IP Networking, NFS, NIS, NIS+, C/C++, C-shell, Bourne shell scripts programming, and similar.
