Virginia Power Electronics Center (VPEC), The Bradley Department of Electrical Engineering. Computer System Administrator (re-advertisement). The center is seeking a computer system administrator responsible for the complete administrative and technical operation of the VPEC Computational Facilities equipped with SUN and HP workstations, around 20 PC's, ethernet network, laser/color printers, scanners, plotters, and other networked devices. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Overall administration of VPEC workstations and PC's, peripherals, and the network; installation and management of application software on both workstations and PC's; routine hardware maintenance; and technical support for all VPEC members. Minimum qualifications: B.S. in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering, with some experience in computer system administration; and the ability to work independently and effectively with a wide variety of people. With preference for an M.S. or equivalent, with related work experience, and considerable knowledge of hardware and software, including: Solaris, HP-UX, system administration and accounting, Windows NT system network administration, TCP/IP Networking, C/C++, C-shell, Bourne shell scripts programming, and similar. College of Engineering. Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies (ADRGS). The ADRGS position encompasses the following principal areas: Faculty Interface-New faculty programs, identification of potential areas for interdisciplinary research, coordination of interdisciplinary research proposals, and organization of visitors' interactions with faculty members. University Interface-Maintain links with the Graduate School and the Research Division, help resolve problems with research contracts and space allocation. College Administration-Administer core research program, prepare data on research for ASEE and other organizations, help establish guidelines and administer cost-sharing commitments on research proposals, coordinate and administer SCHEV equipment allocations, represent college in absence of the dean, serve on recruiting and review committees for the college and university, develop graduate study and research opportunities with industry and government organizations. Graduate Studies-Work with departmental graduate committee chairs on graduate-student recruiting, graduate student-concerns; administer requests for course drops, adds, and approvals. Chairs College Graduate Student Committee, administers graduate-student scholarship and awards programs. Has overview of all college graduate programs and assists in maintaining standards and program quality. Personal Activities-Remain active, at least on a limited basis, in teaching, research, and professional activities. The ADRGS reports directly to the dean of engineering. Qualifications include a doctoral degree in engineering or science and research experience in academia and/or industry in the conduct and management of advanced research programs in engineering. University Libraries. College Librarian for Business and Acquisitions Librarian (re-advertisements) . College librarian for business : The college librarian, a library faculty position, offers faculty and students in the Pamplin College of Business (for more information see http://pamplin.cob.vt.edu/bushome.html) on-site, intradepartmental, discipline-related consulting to expand their awareness and use of information and technological resources, both internal and external to the university. This a mid-career faculty position and reports to the head of User Services. The college librarian will work with the departments in the college to advance the use of computing and information resources in research and teaching. Responsibilities include assisting faculty members with the use of World Wide Web technology, collection development, library instruction, and providing reference service at the main library. Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school. Experience in providing reference liaison work or academic consulting; knowledge of the information needs of scholars and students in business fields primarily in the areas of accounting, finance, economics, marketing, and management science. Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan, and implement effective programs and services. The college librarian must have technical competencies and experience in the use of networked information resources, be resourceful, demonstrate effective instructional and communication skills, and have a strong service ethic. Prefer baccalaureate or advanced degree in a business discipline. Salary is 12-month faculty appointment; rank and anticipated salary in mid-to-upper $30,000s commensurate with experience and credentials. Acquisitions librarian : The university libraries announces a search for an acquisitions librarian, a library faculty position in the Technical Services Department. This position oversees acquisitions of all library materials, with primary responsibilities for developing requests-for-proposal and other vendor negotiations; monitors contracts and vendor performance including approval and blanket orders. Responsible for developing, implementing, and reviewing policies and procedures; investigating technologies aimed at improving services, increasing productivity and enhancing the acquisitions workflow. Authorizes payment of invoices and compliance with all state and university regulations and requirements regarding purchases and contractual agreements. The acquisitions librarian reports to the head of the Technical Services Department. Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school. The successful candidate should show evidence of initiative, flexibility, and the potential to excel in a rapidly changing library environment; demonstrated knowledge of the latest technology related to all technical services processes; ability to work in a team and collaborative environment and have a broad understanding of acquisition processes as they relate to collection management, cataloging, and serial maintenance. Knowledge of traditional print and electronic industries. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Preferred: two or more years of academic library experience; experience with processes analysis. Provost's Office. Associate Provost for Undergraduate Programs (deadline extended). The associate provost for undergraduate programs reports to the vice provost for academic affairs and provides leadership for a wide array of issues and programs related to undergraduate education at Virginia Tech. The responsibilities of this position include implementation of the core curriculum; oversight of the Center for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Center for Academic Enrichment and Excellence, and the University Academic Advising Center; coordination of various faculty awards programs; participation in Summer Orientation process; and supervision of the Honors Program, the University Writing Program, and the Academic Assessment Program. The associate provost advises the vice provost concerning student academic appeals and alleged Honors Systems violations. The associate provost may be involved in teaching, research, and advising in the candidate's academic discipline. Candidates must be members of the Virginia Tech faculty. Preference will be given to senior-level faculty members (associate or full professor with tenure). The associate provost must be able to work effectively with faculty members and administrators in all colleges. Knowledge of issues relating to undergraduate education and experience in teaching undergraduates are essential. The initial appointment will be for three years. The position will be available after July 1, 1997. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. New deadline for application: The position will remain open until filled.
