Spectrum Volume 19 Issue 27 - April 10, 1997

Construction on the new Virginia Tech Student Health and Fitness Center will begin on Monday, April 14. Substantial completion is set for fall, 1998.

The building consists of two main sections, connected by a central portal. The fitness center will include an eight-lane swimming pool, three full-length basketball courts, weight-training center, indoor track, locker rooms, multi-purpose rooms, and staff offices.

The University Student Health Services and the University Counseling Center will include medical-consultation and treatment rooms, a counseling center, a pharmacy, an x-ray room, laboratory, medical records, staff offices, and conference facilities. Once the building is completed, Student Health Services and the University Counseling Center will move from Henderson Hall to this location and be open for business at the start of the Spring Semester 1999.

As part of the project, Stadium Road at Washington Street will be permanently closed and some parking at the tip of the Cassell Coliseum lot will be lost. However, 54 additional parking spaces and a new bus stop will be provided.
