Food, music, and competitive games were among the highlights of this year's Staff Appreciation Day, held in the Rector Field House on May 15 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
A large number of staff members from all over campus came to enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers, grilled chicken, baked beans, salads, and desserts. Catering services estimated that 3,600 were served, 500 more than last year.
Some staff members went on tours of campus, including The Grove, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and the on-campus coffee shop, Deet's Place.
Other staff members spent the time sitting and talking with friends in the field house.
A variety of music, ranging from country to rock, was performed on stage. Some people stood in front of the stage and danced as the music played. One popular group was the Tidal Waves, composed of Charles Steger, vice president for Development and University Relations; Lanny Cross, vice president for Student Affairs; Tom Tillar, vice president for Alumni Relations; and Dixon Hanna, interim vice provost for Outreach.
Members of the Staff Senate judged relay races, in which 12 teams from around campus participated. Teams were composed of staff members from many areas on campus, and most teams included people from several different departments or offices.
First place in the relays went to the Mixed Nuts. Team captain was Linda Fitzgerald. The team's motto was "The Mixed Nuts, the bunch with pizzazz."
Second place went to the Disgruntled Non-Postal Workers from University Relations under captain Matt Winston. The team's motto was "We always come in first place behind the other team."
The Bored Walkers, under its captain, Jamie Evans, came in third. Their team motto was "Our team is comprised of JOE--Just Ordinary Employees."
