Local students win poetry contest

Michelle Gil-Montero, a student at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, won first place in the 1997 Virginia High School Poetry Contest sponsored by Virginia Tech, and at Centreville High School students Andrea Shiell and Patrick League took second and third places.
Judge Aileen Murphy has a master of fine arts degree in poetry from Colorado State University and has taught creative writing and composition for the past 10 years in Colorado, Texas, Illinois, and Virginia. She has had several poems published in literary journals, including Ambergris, Galley Sail Review, and Midland Review as well as the anthology New Voices. She teaches composition at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
