Computer security officer appointed

Spectrum Volume 21 Issue 02 - September 3, 1998

In response to the growing need for education and assessment of the University's computer and network systems security, the Office of the Vice President for Information Systems has appointed the position of information resources and technology security officer.
This position is a full-time appointment, reporting to the Vice President for Information Systems Erv Blythe. After a review of the qualifications of several candidates, the position has been assigned to Wayne Donald, a Virginia Tech employee having the background of managing and assisting a large number of initiatives in the university's administrative information systems for over 15 years.
This position demands technical knowledge in the areas of network, server, and workstation security. However, the primary objective of this appointment relates to enabling change of institutional culture through training and education, working closely with units throughout the university on security issues, and preparing and assisting in developing policies.
A balance must be maintained between data availability and data security (privacy issues). In partnership with Internal Audit, the security officer will work to identify and assist areas of the university that are vulnerable in terms of information resources and systems security.
Departments wishing immediate training or security-related information may contact Donald by calling the office of the Director for Administrative Information Systems at 1-3320.
