INSTRUCTIONAL

Department of Chemistry. Assistant Professor of Experimental Polymer Physical Chemistry. Position starts in August, 1999. Qualified applicants will possess the Ph.D. in chemistry, polymer science, materials science, or related field, and be expected to teach general chemistry, undergraduate physical chemistry, and graduate topical courses. A firm commitment to develop an internationally recognized research program, to establish and maintain significant external funding, and to publish in high quality peer-reviewed journals is expected. Chemists at Virginia Tech enjoy fruitful collaborations with members of other departments in the university through several interdisciplinary centers, including a biotechnology center, a school of veterinary medicine, Polymeric Materials and Interfaces Laboratory, Center of Adhesion and Sealant Science, and Center for Composite and Materials Structures. The successful candidate will have opportunities to participate actively in such interdisciplinary efforts. Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES). Outreach Director. Position holds rank of full-time research associate. This position is responsible for the implementation and execution of all outreach activities, including student outreach, intra-program coordination, faculty outreach, and industrial outreach, to benefit the power-electronics community world wide. The incumbent will serve as the primary liaison between the ERC and the power-electronics community at large. Requirements: Bachelor's degree with experience, with preference for master's degree. Strong people and communication skills; demonstrated ability to implement and execute large-scale programs; effective in managing multiple projects; experience in event planning on and off campus, prior experience with industry and academia, knowledge of academic and industry requirements. Department of Entomology. Postdoctoral Research Associates (two). One-year renewable appointments on a three-year project funded by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. Expected start date is on or after Sept. 1, 1998. The successful applicants will join an integrated study of the synergistic actions of insecticides on biomarkers of cholinergic and dopaminergic dysfunction in Parkinson's disease. The studies will entail subchronic treatment with insecticides in the C57BL6 mouse/MPTP model of Parkinson's disease. Following treatment, analysis of motor behaviors, and neuro-chemical studies of dopaminergic and cholinergic pathways in the mammalian striatum will be performed. Ph.D. in biochemistry, toxicology, entomology, or related discipline. Individuals with experience in neuro-toxicological research are especially encouraged to apply. Starting salary is $25,000.
