Information Sessions Scheduled for New Sick-leave Policy
By Doug Martin, Human Resources manager
The last session of the General Assembly established a sick-leave,
family-and-personal-leave, and short-term and long-term disability program for
classified employees (staff) and faculty members who are members of the
Virginia Retirement System. (VRS).
The effective date for the new program known as the Virginia Sickness and
Disability Program (VSDP) is Jan. 1, 1999, and is mandatory for staff members
hired on or after that date. New faculty members will have an option of
participating in the university sick and disability plan or joining the VSDP.
Current faculty and staff members who are members of the Virginia Retirement
System have the option of joining the new plan or they can continue their
current sick-leave and disability programs.
Current Virginia Retirement System faculty and staff members will need to make
a choice between their existing plan or the new program during the period Jan.
1, 1999 through March 31, 1999. If faculty or staff members opt for the new
plan, they then may choose to transfer existing sick leave into the new plan on
an hour-for-hour basis or convert sick leave to Virginia Retirement System
credit. Each 173 hours of sick leave converts to one month of VRS credit.
Enrollment kits are to be distributed to each eligible person in December
1998.
The following general sessions have been scheduled to explain these programs
to the campus community. All meetings will be in the auditorium of the
Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center
