GANNETT BUYS MONTANA PAPER

Gannett Co. Inc. on Friday announced the purchase of the Great Falls Tribune in Great Falls, Mont., from Cowles Media Co. for $41 million.

The Tribune, Montana's second-largest newspaper, has a circulation of 34,000 Monday-Saturday, and 41,000 on Sunday.

The purchase is the company's first in Montana.

"We are pleased to be coming into Great Falls and the state of Montana," said John J. Curley, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Gannett.

David C. Cox, president and chief executive officer of Cowles Media, which is based in Minneapolis, said, "We value very highly our 25-year association with the Great Falls Tribune and are proud of the leadership role it has played in Montana."

The acquisition brings Gannett's number of daily newspapers to 83, including USA TODAY. Montana is the 41st state in which Gannett will have operations.
