NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY ON EXHIBIT

A survey of night photography in the 20th century is on exhibit through April 1 at the Roanoke Museum of Fine Arts.

Titled "Night Light," the show is on loan from Hallmark Cards, Inc. exhibit.

It inaugurates the museum's newly remodeled galleries on the second floor of Center in the Square, and it represents the museum's observance of the 150th anniversary of photography.

Among the 85 photographs in the show are works by Alfred Stieglitz, Margaret Bourke-White and O. Winston Link, who is known for his night images of locomotives.

In conjunction with the exhibit:

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, photographer Keith Graham of the Roanoke Times & World-News will lead a "night shoot." Interested participants should bring a 35mm camera with film and, if possible, a tripod and cable release.

There will be no charge but pre-registration is necessary.

On March 17 and 24, Roanoke photographers Eileen McCaul-Basham and Jeff Steele will teach a class for teen-agers titled "Exploring Alternative Photographic Processes - Cyanotype."

Tuition is $50 for museum members and $60 for non-members. Pre-registration is required.

McCaul-Basham and Steele will lead the workshop for adults on Saturday, April 7. Tuition for the single-session workshop is $40 for museum members and $50 for non-members.

The classes will be held in Center on Church. The number to call for additional information or to register for the night shoot and classes is 342-5760.

Two prominent photographers will give lectures about their work during the exhibit. Marie Cosindas of Boston will speak March 22 and Harry Callahan of Atlanta on March 29.

Both lectures will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the museum lecture hall in Center on Church. There will be an admission charge of $3 for museum members and $4 for non-members.

"Night Light" and the related educational programs are underwritten by the Roanoke law firm of Woods Rogers & Hazlegrove.
