GEORGIA PRESIDENT MUM ON PURSUIT OF UVA JOB

University of Georgia President Charles Knapp, who is being considered for the top job at the University of Virginia, has discussed the possible move with his boss at the University System of Georgia.

Knapp, who arrived at Georgia less than four years ago, has told University System Chancellor H. Dean Propst he is under consideration at Virginia, Propst said Friday.

Asked which way Knapp might be leaning, Propst said, "You'd have to ask him."

But Knapp wasn't saying. Thursday night, he said, "They contacted me, and I have spoken with them. ... I wouldn't use the word `candidate' for me at this point."

Then Knapp stopped talking Friday, issuing only a brief statement in which he said Virginia hasn't tried to hire him and he hasn't said he would take the job.

"It would be a tremendous loss to the state of Georgia and the University System" if Knapp were to leave, Propst said.

Knapp, in his statement Friday, said the "lines of communication" with Virginia "are still open." However, Georgia spokesman Tom Hallman said Knapp had not visited Virginia to interview for the job.
