Next school year, they won't.
Beginning this fall, Radford will offer an upper-level general studies program in Roanoke, most likely at Virginia Western Community College.
"We saw a need up there" in Roanoke, said Adlyn Hicks, the university's coordinator of adult learning services.
The 40-student Roanoke concentration will augment the on-campus adult program and, like that one, will lead to a bachelor of general studies degree.
Classes will be held once a week at night, 6:30-9:30, and will be taught by four Radford University professors.
Tuition is $89 per semester hour. The chasses are open to applicants 25 or older who - because the curriculum will use junior- and senior-level courses - must hold an associate degree (two years of college) or have completed 60 or more college or university credits with a 2.2 grade-point average.
"These people will be immediately jumping into" advanced courses, Hicks said. The courses - including English, sociology, psychology and communication - will focus on work-place communication and emphasize public speaking, writing and interpersonal interaction skills.
Hicks said this type of program tends to appeal to "someone who is middle or lower management who needed a degree to move up the ladder."
But "I've had everything from vice presidents to clerks on campus," she added.
