CAVE SPRING GIRLS FALL TO GAR-FIELD

Cave Spring's bid to defend its Group AAA Northwestern Region girls' basketball title fell five points short Saturday night as the Knights lost at Gar-Field 62-57.

Senior guard Kay Caldwell led Cave Spring with a game-high 18 points. Junior forwards Lisa Hodges and Ali Colgrove added 15 and 12 points, respectively.

For Gar-Field, junior forward Charleata Beale scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Junior center Rachel Hemmer also had 17 points.

Both teams advance to next the state tournament next week at Williamsburg.

As the Northwestern Region runners-up, the Knights (22-3) will play Northern Region champion James Madison of Vienna at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday. The Indians (23-2) will meet Northern Region runner-up Robinson of Fairfax at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Saturday night's game was not expected to be a blowout. The teams had played each other a year ago in the regional final, won by Cave Spring 68-57, and came into this game with identical 22-2 records.

The game was close, but the Knights never were able to get into a groove, turning over the ball 28 times.

Other contributing factors included the absence of starting center Jenny Bird, who fouled out with 6:30 left in the game after grabbing 10 rebounds, and Gar-Field's aggressive defense.

"We had our chances," said Dave Layman, Cave Spring's coach. "We had some unforced errors out there; sometimes we were our own worst enemy. We never really got in sync."

Although the Knights trailed for most of the game, they closed to 47-46 at the beginning of the fourth quarter on two Caldwell free throws.

After that, however, Cave Spring never got closer than four as critical turnovers doomed the comeback bid. The Indians sealed the victory with some clutch baskets and free-throw shooting.
