Spray string recalled

Several million cans of spray string confetti are being recalled because the propellants are flammable, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Several accidents occurred when this type of product was sprayed near lighted candles on birthday cakes and burst into flames, resulting in serious burn injuries, primarily to children, said Jacqueline Jones-Smith, who heads the commission's panel.

At least eight people, three adults and five children, have suffered first- to third-degree burns from similar incidents, she said.

The recall involved 1.13 million cans of the streamers from five manufacturers:

3.5-ounce cans of "Streamer Spray," distributed by Northeast Imports, Inc. of Central Falls, R.I.

150-gram cans of "Masquerade Crazy Strings," distributed by Masquerade, Inc. of Brooklyn, N.Y.

3.5-ounce cans of "Goofy Flying String," distributed by Franco-American Novelty Co., Inc. of Glendale, N.Y.

3.5-ounce cans of "Tricky Fun String," distributed by Topstone Industries of Danbury, Conn.

3.5-ounce and 7-ounce cans of "It's Fun Time String Confetti," distributed by Fun World Division of Carle Place, N.Y.

"Extra Thick Super String," distributed by E. Davis, Inc. of Piscataway, N.J. Any cans made before October should be discarded and the orange, blue, pink or green plastic can cap should be mailed to the company for two replacements with the reformulated items.
