Charles J. Via, Sr., age 86, of 2711 Spring Road, S.W., died Saturday
afternoon at a local hospital. Mr. Via was a retired captain with 33 years
service with the City of Roanoke Fire Department where he helped organize and
served as first president of Virginia Federal Credit Union. Later he was
employed with the Fuller Brush Company, Light Weight Block Company and the
Electrolux Corporation. He was a past president of Villa Heights Lions Club.
Mr. Via was a 32nd degree Mason and a 50 year member of Virginia Heights
Masonic Lodge No. 324 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies and Kazim Shrine
Temple. He was a member and deacon of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Mrs. Elizabeth Hardy Via; two sons and
daughters-in-law, C. James, Jr. and Marsha Via, Craig County; Joseph S. and
Connie Via, San Diego, Calif.; sister, Miss Lillian Via, Newport News; eight
grandchildren; one great-grandson. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers
memorials may be made to the American Heart Fund or the Roanoke Lifesaving
Crew. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Raleigh Court Presbyterian
Church. Dr. James A. Allison, Jr. will officiate. Interment with Masonic rites
will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Oakey's South
Chapel.
