PEARISBURG - Anne Clotilde Rodes Ballard, age 87, died at her home Saturday evening, March 3, 1990. Mrs. Ballard was born in Albermarle County on August 2, 1902, and was a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Coiner Rodes. She received a BS Degree from Madison College now James Madison University and a Masters of Education Degree from V.P.I. & S.U. She taught in the Virginia High Schools for over 43 years until her retirement in 1967. She was an active member of national, state and local education associations. Mrs. Ballard had been a life-long member of the Episcopal Church. She was an active communicant of Christ Episcopal Church of Pearisburg. Mrs. Ballard was the first woman to be elected to a Vestry Committee in the Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Virginia. She served as such for nine years. For 30 years, she was chairman of the Christ Church Altar Guild and was instrumental in getting many material improvements in the organization of the church. She was a member of the choir for many years. She was a member of the George Paris Chapter of the D.A.R., a member of the Pearisburg Senior Womans' Club and particularly interested in the founding of the Pearisburg Public Library. She resigned from the club only when the time of the meeting conflicted with her church work. She is survived by her husband, Herbert H. Ballard, Pearisburg; two sisters, Mrs. B. W. Shelton and Miss Mary Betty Rodes, both of Virginia Beach; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in the Christ Episcopal Church, Pearisburg, with the Rev. Blanche Powell officiating with interment in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg. There will be no public visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christ Episcopal Church. The family may be reached at the residence of 1403 Cabot Dr., Pearisburg. Funeral arrangements are by Givens Funeral Home, Pearisburg.
