NOVELIST DOWNPLAYS GOP CANDIDACY PUSH

National Republican leaders have urged best-selling author Tom Clancy to run for Congress, but he says he is too busy promoting the movie adapted from his book, "The Hunt For Red October."

"It certainly deserves consideration, civic duty and all that," said Clancy.

But he's busy with interviews and promotional appearances for the film that opened Friday, and said he has "not had any time to consider" a race against incumbent Rep. Roy P. Dyson, D-Md.

Rep. Vin Weber, R-Minn., announced at a dinner attended by Clancy that Republicans were urging him to enter the race. Clancy also was approached by Ed Rollins, chief tactician for the National Republican Congressional Committee, and other Republicans, The Baltimore Sun reported.
