TRUCK SPILLS DEISEL IN SALEM STREAM

An estimated 75 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the parking lot of a Hardees restaurant in Salem Sunday and some of the fuel drained into a tributary of the Roanoke River.

The spill occurred shortly before 5 p.m. after a tractor trailer bottomed out at Industrial Drive and U.S. 460, rupturing one of its two fuel tanks.

The driver of the P*I*E Nationwide truck drove to the Hardees lot at 2038 W. Main St., where the fuel leaked for several hours.

A hazardous materials unit from Salem blocked the flow of fuel into the stream with absorbent sand. Authorities said they weren't sure how much of the fuel had drained into the stream.
