It will be the first time the teams have met in the first round since 1970, when Virginia prevailed 95-93. Carolina has lost only two first-round games since then - in 1973 and 1986 - although it received byes five times in that span.
The Tar Heels (8-6 in the ACC, 19-11 overall) moved into a tie for third place with an 87-75 victory Sunday at Duke, but lost a draw with Georgia Tech, with whom it had split the regular-season series.
Clemson (10-4, 23-6) clinched the regular-season championship by virtue of Duke's loss to North Carolina and will meet the No. 8 seed, Wake Forest (3-11, 12-15), at noon.
Second-seeded Duke (9-5, 23-7) will meet No. 7 Maryland (6-8, 18-12) at 7 p.m., with No. 3 Georgia Tech (8-6, 21-6) facing No. 6 N.C. State (6-8, 18-11) at 9:30 p.m.
North Carolina State had sole possession of fifth place to start the day, but fell into a tie with Virginia and Maryland by virtue of a 93-91 loss to Wake Forest in Raleigh, N.C.
UVa, which lost twice to Maryland during the regular season, would have been seeded seventh if State had won. Because State and Maryland split their regular-season series, there was a three-way draw.
Virginia coach Terry Holland said only that he preferred an afternoon first-round game, since the semifinals will be played the next afternoon.
