TRUCK LEAKS FUEL INTO PARKING LOT

About 30 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the parking lot of a Hardee's restaurant in Salem Sunday evening, but none of the fuel drained into a nearby stream that is a tributary of the Roanoke River, according to Salem Fire Chief Ron Hartman.

The spill occurred around 5 p.m. after a tractor-trailer bottomed out at Industrial Drive and U.S. 460, rupturing one of its fuel tanks.

The driver of the P*I*E Nationwide truck did not notice the tank was leaking until he pulled into the Hardee's lot at 2038 W. Main St., Hartman said today. The driver called Salem emergency services workers, who drained the tank, Hartman said.

A hazardous materials unit from Salem blocked the flow of fuel into the stream with sand and removed the fuel from the parking lot, Hartman said.
