FIREFIGHTERS EARN EASY A ON FIRE TEST BY LAURENCE HAMMACK STAFF WRITER

Firefighters at Roanoke's airport fire station didn't have far to go Sunday night to fight a fire - about 75 feet.

Nor did they have to go far to find a cause for two fires set in trash cans outside the No. 10 station on Aviation Drive Northwest.

When police arrived a few minutes later, firefighters had a suspect in custody.

The man told authorities he was conducting a test for a government agency that regulates fire safety.

Roger Dale Hollaway, 37, was charged with arson. Firefighters told police that Hollaway showed up at the station about 9:10 p.m. and asked for a drink of water.

A few minutes later, firefighters noticed smoke coming from two trash cans, one in front of the station and another behind the building.

In what may have been a record response time, the fires were doused.

And if it was a test, the fire department easily passed. A firefighter at the station said today the response time was "under the limit."
