ETHIOPIA LEADER WANTS TO SCRAP MARXISM

President Mengistu Haile Mariam on Monday proposed scrapping Ethiopia's rigid, Soviet-style economic system and replacing it with a mixed economy and free markets.

In a speech to the Central Committee of the ruling Marxist Workers' Party, Mengistu turned his back on more than 15 years of central state planning and conceded it had been a failure.

The Central Committee must approve Mengistu's recommendations, but there appeared to be little chance it would not go along with his plans.
