HOUSE BURNED TWICE BY SUSPICIOUS FIRES

Roanoke firefighters spent a second straight night Monday battling a suspicious fire in a vacant house at 1114 Ferdinand Ave. S.W.

The blaze was contained mostly to the basement of the house and damage apparently was not extensive. No one was injured.

The fire was reported about 11 p.m. Sunday's fire was reported at 11:48 p.m.

Neighbors said the house has not been vacant long. Mail was still in the mailbox Monday night and clothes could be seen hanging in the basement.

Two other suspicious fires also were reported in Roanoke Sunday night and early Monday morning.

The first was reported at 9:11 p.m. at a home in the 1200 block of Tazewell Avenue Southeast.

The occupant of the home was arrested a short distance away and was charged with being drunk in public, police said.
