H. Lee Hale, 36, a Salem native, says he will run for the position vacated in December by James F. Tobey, who retired for health reasons.
The five circuit judges in the valley unanimously appointed June L. Higgs, a Salem civic leader and branch bank manager, to fill Tobey's unexpired term. Higgs was chosen from a field of 14 candidates to fill the position for a year until the November election.
Higgs, who managed a branch of Salem Bank And Trust, also has said she will be a candidate for the clerk's job in November.
Hale has worked for the city of Salem for 16 years and was a patrol officer in the Police Department before becoming an appraiser. His family operated a grocery store in West Salem for many years.
Hale is a life member of the Salem Rescue Squad, where he has been an active volunteer for 17 years.
