"There were several times when they [bent] and didn't break," Ryan said after Monday night's 67-64 overtime victory in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. "They kind of kept me feeling good about the whole game by letting me know when things were going awry and when things were OK. This was definitely the biggest game of my career."
Tammi Reiss hit a short jumper with 30 seconds left in overtime to lift Virginia to victory in the first overtime ever in the women's ACC tournament final.
The shot came after N.C. State forward Krista Kilburn hit a jumper to tie the score 64-64 with 1:05 left. The Wolfpack had an opportunity to tie again with 14 seconds left when Christa Hull was fouled by Teshia Ward, but Hull missed both free throws.
Dena Evans hit a free throw with 10 seconds that sealed Virginia's victory.
Virginia held a 37-25 halftime lead, but N.C. State used a 22-9 run to take a 47-46 lead on a 3-point jumper by Nichole Lehmann with 10:59 left. Kerri Hobbs scored nine points in the run for the Wolfpack.
N.C. State built the lead to 56-50 with 4:33 left on a free throw by Kilburn. But Virginia forged a 57-57 deadlock with 1:57 left on a 3-point jumper by Reiss.
Reiss gave Virginia a 60-57 lead on a free throw with 1:11 left in regulation, but N.C. State's Andrea Stinson answered with a 3-pointer with 29 seconds left in regulation to force the overtime.
Reiss led Virginia (26-5) with 23 points, and Ward added 12.
Stinson paced N.C. State (24-5) with 15 points, Lehmann had 12, and Sharon Manning finished with 11.
