Mrs. Josephine Roles Thornton, age 80, of Route 3, died Monday, March 5,
1990. She was born in Bluefield, W.Va. November 2, 1909, and was the daughter
of the late James Roles and Margaret Atkins Roles. Mrs. Thornton was also
preceded in death by her grandson, Prince Edward Thornton, III; her brother,
Everett Roles; and sisters, Mary Roles and Hassie Clark. She was the devoted
wife of Prince Edward Thornton, Sr. and loving mother to Joy and Bill Almond,
Ed and Bev Thornton, and Peg and D.B. Martin; grandmother to Eddie and
Sharlene, Billy, Bobby and Johnny Almond, Lori and Danny Thornton, Vikki
Funck, Sammy and Helen, Timmy and Kristen, and Davy Martin; great-grandmother
of six. Also surviving her in death are sisters, Ruth Goode, Sue Burgess, and
Pauline Beckett; sister-in-law, Evamae Beckner; nieces, nephews, and a host of
beloved friends. Funeral services will be conducted at the Red Valley United
Methodist Church at 10:00 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. A. Ray Miller
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family requests
that those wishing to make memorials might consider the Red Valley United
Methodist Church, Route 3, Box 1066, Boones Mill, Va., 24065. The family will
receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Arrington-Bussey
Funeral Home.
