He succeeds William F. Hawkins, who resigned effective March 15 to enter private business.
Lawson was president of Crestar's Roanoke Bank from 1986 until it merged last May with Colonial American National Bank. Hawkins, who had been president of Colonial American Bankshares, then assumed the local presidency and Lawson was named senior executive vice president and head of the commercial division.
As president, Lawson is responsible for offices in Roanoke and Radford. Crestar also has a western regional office here headed by Edward Harris.
A graduate of Virginia Tech, Lawson received his master's of business administration from the University of Richmond.
He joined Crestar in 1979 as vice president in the commercial division in Lynchburg.
Lawson is on the boards of the Heart Association, United Way and Roanoke Economic Development Commission.
