THREE COAL COMPANIES TO PAY BACK WAGES

Three Vasant coal mining corporations and their chief officers have agreed to pay $100,000 in back wages to 175 current and former workers. The action resulted from an investigation by the U.S. Wage and Hour Division after complaints filed with the U.S. Department of Labor alleged overtime and record-keeping violations.

Ordered to make the payments are Peggy-O Coal Co., Poplar Creek Coal Co., Chaparral Coal Co. and James Ball and Kenneth Vandyke, their president and vice president.

Former employees of two other coal companies once headed by Ball and Vandyke also will get back pay. The companies, Heather Coal Co. and Kres Coal Corp., are no longer in existence but their ex-employees are covered by the award. - Staff report
