ETSU HANGS TOUGH, BEATS VA. TECH

East Tennessee State scored the game's first three runs and held on for a 3-2 college baseball victory over Virginia Tech on Tuesday at English Field.

The Buccaneers broke a nine-game losing streak to the Hokies. ETSU hadn't beaten Virginia Tech since 1983.

Jimbo Thornton sparked the Bucs (3-5), scoring their first run and driving in the second. He hit three singles in his first three at bats. Designated hitter Shane Leech singled in the winning run in the fifth inning.

Freshman designated hitter Mike Reedy provided what little offense the Hokies could muster, driving in both of Virginia Tech's runs.

Mike Montgomery got the victory and Rex Havens earned his first save of the year.

Greg Margheim took the loss for Tech (3-2).
